With all the German-inspired food we have around here, my Austrian pet is disappointed by Subeta's selection of cakes. "There are a lot of cakes!" I protest. But he's a snob... a snob with a sweet tooth, and he wants more German and Austrian dessert options.
Baumkuchen - a traditional layered cake that, when sliced, resembles tree rings, hence its name (it translates to "tree cake" in German). This is the German name; in Austria it's known as Prügelkrapfen (according to wiki).
There's also the Polish Sękacz, which is related to Baumkuchen but may be even older and apparently takes forever to make. It's eaten at Christmas in Poland and Lithuania and is also popular at Lithuanian weddings. I've always found the shape of this cake fascinating.
Linzer torte - named for the city of Linz, this is a crumbly Austrian short cake covered in plum or redcurrant jam. It's said to be the oldest cake in the world.
Sachertorte - another Austrian cake, this is two layers of dense chocolate sponge cake with a layer of apricot jam in the middle, covered with chooclate icing. We have , but... that's a wig, and a CW. ^^;
That's all I can think of at the moment, anyone else can feel free to suggest stuff!
These all look pretty tasty :) I'm all for more delicious food artwork on Subeta.
I absolutely agree with this suggestion, I love cake so much. drools
