Does it generally show you if an username is available for taking when it shows your own profile when you type in subeta.net/users/wanted username?

Yes, that should work. It will take you to your profile if there isn't a user with that username.

An easy way to do that is also going to 'search subeta' and typing the username instead of typing a web address. c:

Except the last I checked, that didn't show frozen users so that's not entirely accurate. ^_^;
