So I decided to give myself a tattoo last night using a boiled and flamed needle with Higgin's Black Magic ink.

I'm not sure if I went deep enough, but only healing in time will tell.

Have you ever given or gotten a stick and poke?

Probably get it done professionally if I ever got a tattoo. Sounds interesting though, never heard of stick and poke tattooing.

The one you did on yourself turned out quite well though.

It's healing just great, actually! I was worried because I wear high-top converse at work, and I figured the constant contact wouldn't be the best, but all is well. I'm just in the itchy stage now ... just pat it like an itchy weave.

Maybe! I already have a professionally done tattoo on my chest, and I know for a fact that I will be getting a lot more.

The downside to a stick and poke, although it's free, is that you can't get very big with them.

Cute!! Last summer I had heavily considered doing it.. got the supplies and everything. I wanted someone to do it with me, though, and no one wanted to. Everyone advised me against it :<

... That sounds dangerous. Infections and all. Plus, the art quality probably can't be very good out of a method such as something that sounds an awful lot like "connect the dots".

Ha ha ha you have to let us know how it heals! I have a lot of friends with many tattoos like this, but none of my own. The tattoos I like and want and have are too big for this method.

Actually, I tried to do one on myself a few years back...I used a clean syringe with blue ink but I didn't go deep enough and it washed out within a week or so. It was a cute little heart while it lasted though, I miss it. =)

I think it's petty cute! I wouldn't get a stick-and-poke tattoo myself because of the risk of infection, but I think they're pretty neat for how simplistic they are.

My mum did this to herself once. She drew a seal on her thigh but she didn't go deep enough and it washed out. There's still the tiniest hints of it, but they just look a bit like veins so she doesn't mind it too much.

I would do it but I know for a fact I wouldn't go deep enough and it would suck, plus all the tattoos I want / have are too big and whatnot for that method of tattooing. But that one is so cute! I'd love to have something like that.

Stick and poke tattoos are incredibly unsafe and the risk of infection is very high.

Even boiling a needle and running it through a flame will absolutely not get rid of everything on it. No amount of boiling will destroy spores. Alcohol will not kill everything either. And even besides that our homes are not always as sterile and clean an environment for this kind of thing as we might think since we usually don't have the really high grade cleaners readily available.

I would advise going to a professional from a reputable shop. Not only will they have the chemicals available to properly clean work areas and make them as safe as possible, they will also have an autoclave to clean their tools. An autoclave is the only thing that can safely destroy all microbes on needles and other similar objects.

I have seen some real horror shows with infections from both a stick and poke tattoo and a few self piercers. It's not pretty and definitely not worth the risk.
