So let me adopt Hardcover and Paperback, and while their current colors are lovely, I think something else might work better, but I'm not sure what. Also maybe looking for some TC/minion help with them.

Their personalities are somewhat planned out already, but not 100%.

Hardcover is a bit of a book snob, and won't read anything he thinks is 'too popular' because 9 times out of 10 the books are terrible in his opinion, so no Twilight for him. His guilty secret is that he did read all of the Harry Potter books and greatly enjoyed them, but no one knows that. He comes across as somewhat stuck up, haughty, and tends to look down on people for reading books he thinks are awful, and doesn't hesitate to go into a long speech about why they are.

Paperback is much more laid back and friendly. She'll read anything at least once, even if it's not that great, because she just enjoys reading. A (somewhat bad?) habit of hers is to collect merchandise from any book she happens to like. She sometimes comes across as a bit annoying in her love of books, because she's always shoving the latest thing she's reading in someone's face, especially Hardcover's, and asks if they've read it/if they plan to, because it's just fantastic! (Even if it's not.)

No, they don't need to be the same color/species.

There's no colors I really prefer over any others, but I don't think Bloodred or Nightmare would suit either of them.

Hehe, of course, BR or NM wouldn't fit.

For Hardcover, the following two pets come to my mind immediately. They seem to be wise and picky readers.

I like the Mahar, but I already have a Glacier Lasirus.

Those might work, but I think I've seen someone use a book-holding Terracoon before, and I don't like Waradors.

For Paperback, maybe a Chibi Pet ? Because they seem more curious, and you mentioned Paperback will read pretty much anything once. Chibi might also fit too because it's a more 'childish' habit to want to collect tons of merchandise and be overly enthusiastic about a book. My top picks would be a Chibi Terracoon, Chibi Malticorn, Spectrum Jollin, Spectrum Terracoon. Basically any Spectrum pet might work. I have a book-loving pet myself and she's a Chibi Devonti.

For Hardcover, I'd go with something Glacier. Perhaps the Glacier Archan because in it's pose it's kind of sighing, suggesting Hardcover is fed up with the amount of 'crappy' books out there and how he cant find anything he likes and so on. That's my first pick for Hardcover, but others that also work are a Glacier Ruffie (it has sort of a bored expression), or Glacier Demi (it has sort of a 'better than you' expression on it's face).

Definitely liking the idea of a chibi pet. I was toying with the idea of a Glade Ontra for a bit since it's sitting up and I had the idea to give her an overlay with a stack of books under the paws, not so sure of that now that I've seen the chibi pets.

Actually, I was going to mention a Chibi Montre for Paperback, until I saw you suggest a Montre for Hardcover?

I have one of each, and I definitely do think that the common Montre looks somewhat like.. well, he can do without your input, let's say ;)

I think once you find your pets it'll be easier to find minions for them.

I get the illusion of a haughty person wrapping their fur shawl around themselves because of the pose, but it's also because it kind of reminds me of that whole huddled in a blanket reading a book thing that people( myself included) sometimes do. The pet also appears suitably cold/haughty that I think it would work.
