This regards Coos, whom I have a pet on here dedicated to in case anyone wants to go and read about her/see her. We think she's probably around 12/13 based on her activity - she doesn't get much exercise, doesn't ever chase things, doesn't run anywhere...the fastest she'll do is sort of canter to the door if it starts raining or something. She also climbs the stairs one step at a time and no paws do the same thing at the same time (it's not smooth with the front and back working together, it's jerky and seems like a struggle like she has to remind herself to move each paw individually). We've never owned another cat so we have no comparison.

Anyway, she's normally always been a vocal cat; she will meow when there's no one in a room, she'll actively seek company, she will certainly let you know when she wants to go out/when she's hungry, when you call her in from outside she'll 'grumble', making little sort of 'hrrrmmm' sounds, ect as if she's annoyed you left her out or as if she's saying hi (hard to tell XD). She used to sleep through the night (going outside before we all went to bed).

Recently we changed her wet food (brand-wise) and she seems to like it a LOT more. She will want to have wet food about 4 times a day plus biscuits (talking like almost a pouch at a time here), whereas before she would eat far more biscuits than wet food. She is also needing to go out during the middle of night (4am or so), having to wake us up to do so (no cat flap) which used to never happen what with her basically sleeping as we do. This is just something that we do, as if she were a baby needing feeding, because we love her - even if we're all tired the next day. The other night she did this 3 times...we opened the door for her each time, but she refused to go out. We had put down fresh water and fresh biscuits for her so she wasn't hungry/thirsty but...she kept meowing. It wasn't a cute little meow either, it was a very demanding meow.

I'm worried about a few things here:

  1. She's asking for more food because she loves the new food. She seriously chows down on that stuff. The pouches we gave her before...she liked but she wouldn't eat anywhere near as much. This is a good thing! And not an issue. And might be why she goes out more.

  2. She's distressed by the food change despite liking the actual food, causing her to be far more vocal for seemingly no reason...which is worrying.

  3. She's just pushing us to see how far we'll go because it's like she's a kid wanting sweets once they've had them for the first time. She'd probably eat 6 pouches a day if she could. In this case it's a bit of discipline for us not just giving in to her every time because obviously we don't want her being overweight.

In case any of guys have a cat or more than one cat. ^_^

Well I have a few tips I can share since this is your first cat. Here are some behavioural things I have observed.

If she is eating more wet food than before than her need for water and hard food will diminish. Always keep fresh water available, of course, but from what I have seen cats who are put on wet food actually end up not needing just water at all as she will be getting her hydration from the wet food. Mixing a little more water into the wet food isn't too bad of an idea. That being said, if she REALLY likes the wet food, then chances are that's all she is going to ask for eventually. Treats are yum and they will still take those to a point, but yeah, I find that cats who are put on a wet food that they really enjoy tend to become beggars for a little while. Basically, if you offer her something she doesn't need/want be it water or dry food, she's going to be a little annoyed and may raise her voice to you :P So her 'demanding' is normal at this point. I'm sure she will calm down eventually. Don't give in too much to her. Don't overfeed.

She's eating JUST fine obviously and you haven't mentioned any bathroom troubles that could suggest UTI from change in wet food so I think she's just adjusting to the change as well as very much liking it... so she's just begging you.

My advice: Put your foot down a little bit and she will eventually settle down. Also, perhaps invest in a cat flap. :P

Thank you for the advice. ^_^ She seems to have no trouble going to the bathroom (sometimes we check she's okay if she's gone for a while, she never really leaves the garden. We don't fuss constantly though, most of the time we let her do her own thing).

The cat flap is only a no-go because my dad recently got a new door for the kitchen since it's the family's main way in and out of the house. Before the new back door, the kitchen would get really, really cold pretty much all year round, which would spread around the whole of downstairs. The new back door keeps heat in, but putting a cat flap in it would negate this completely. XD

To me it sounds like a case of 'omg this is good I want more'. As a note, I hope you always have water and kibble down for her, water at least anyways. I may not be reading it right but it sounds like you might not have it.

She is doing exactly what you think she is and demanding you give her more. I've heard that meow, it's the 'NOW NOW NOW' meow. Sort of like a kid stomping on the floor. My cat can't have a certain brand of cat kibble because it is literally treats to her. We tried to mix it in with her other food and she would nimbly pick through the entire dish, leave the regular food, and eat the special food. Very skilled teeth.

Sounds like she was satisfied and full with her other food and now she's got extra super yummy food that's like a big treat and she is ready and willing to have seconds and more because it's so good. Unless this new food is a diet food and doesn't hold the same weight that the other food would in her stomach, she's not actually extra hungry, she's being a big hog.

I would suggest that you stop dolling it out. Every pet should have some semblance of a food plan and meow = food is not one. My cat has a can of wet placed in her bowl in the morning, she eats breakfast, she finishes it through the day, and she nibbles hard food whenever she desires. Yes we've given her extra very rarely if she really needs it, and we can usually tell hunger vs hog.

She's going to go out more because she's eating more, simple dynamics, not much to worry about. She's being a big brat though with the way she's acting. She KNOWS that she can get you up by meowing at night for the 'bathroom'. She figures she can then bribe you into what else she wants. You might want to consider a litter box with her old age. Litter box means you won't have to get up in the night and a low easy to get into one will help avoid possible accidents.

The problem here is more you letting her get away with it. Cut back on the food, ignore her demanding voice and let her know that her fussing isn't going to win more goodies. If she meows to go at night, and does not go out, don't answer again. Don't let her continue to trick you.

Ah I absolutely do! She loves biscuits so much but she eats far less of them now she's all hyped over these new pouches. XD She used to eat far more dry than wet food. She also always has water down and we refill it regularly even if it's not been touched so it doesn't go stale.

Lol yep, it does sound like a 'NOW' meow...and that is very clever haha.

Ahhhh alright, I'll take your advice there. We'll make sure she still has plenty of food but at more set times...and if she meows during the day for more, she always has dry biscuits down. And yes, I know we're soft on her with the going-out business. I think it's more that we're worried she's desperate or something from the way she meows. I'm not sure a litter box is possible because we have nowhere to put it...the bathroom is too small. The only downstairs rooms are the living room and the kitchen. But we'll try putting her out regardless of if she wants to at night before we all go to bed, that might work. Thank you so much. :)

If you have even a closet you can leave open halfway you can shove one in there! I've poked litter boxes in some surprising places. Cats generally love to have cubbies so even a cupboard could work. If you do get one, one tip of mine is to flex it at the store. It makes it easier to move and clean on your part if it isn't flimsy. My latest litter box I couldn't do that with without cutting tags and I'm so irritated with it! The sides are so weak that I'm scared I'll break it when I lift it to clear the litter out for its weekly clean.

Yeah set times seems to help. I don't know about her but all the animals I've known have a love of routines once they get into it. My cat loves it so much that if one day we give her a treat randomly, the next day, same time, she decides it should happen again. Sometimes it's hard for US to remember what she's meowing about. o___o; Usually she points the bag out though and we remember.

Good luck ignoring the meow! It's that big now now now fussy meow that gets me. I've never quite heard such ugly obnoxious things as when she decides she's being screwed over somehow!

LOL wow, that's time-conscious for you. And thank you for the luck haha. I know exactly what you mean, it's a really -cross- meow, like "FEED ME OR ELSE". :')

Very! Lol. She has one heck of an internal clock that's for sure. She actually springs up, scrambles down from her post, still half asleep, to sit there and announce herself for her regular treat times. Like a zombie. Yup that is the one! It just makes you wonder how your sweet little baby can sound like such a meanie. Mine is turning nine in May! Can't believe she's so 'old' in numbers because she isn't in actions.

I used to own a cat, although, I will admit that I cannot add anything as my knowledge is limited as well. xD Best of luck. <3
