So I was reading up and thought about how pets don't get really any attention after winning a pet spotlight which is true there isn't much you can do. I'm not sure if this was ever suggested before or is even a good idea but here it goes anyway.

I thought about something I call fames or faming. On each pet page there would be a fame button and users could fame other pets. Theres a lot of great pets out there that haven't won spotlights yet and I think it would be cool if there was something like this to show that putting tons of work into a pet pays off. Adding to this, there can even be achievements for amount of fames and a high score page. Rules could be established such as 5 fames per day and they reset everyday. I just think it would be something cool to add on to the whole pet profile aspect instead of just one award that you can possibly earn once. For people who already won the award this could be something that continues for your pet instead of just sitting in your profile. What do you guys think? If its stupid I understand haha its late and my mind is wandering.

Kind of like the Like/Heart button for HAs and Posts?

I dislike the idea of attaching achievements to it, seems like it woukd quickly turn into a game of "Like one of the Pets Above You"

However I really like the idea of having a small feature where someone could quickly (and anonymously) show their appreciation for a pet. Maybe having it set up like the Human HA where you can check the number in User Preferences.

If you want to show your appreciation for a pet, why not send a small present and a nice note through the gift center? I don't like the idea of giving pets likes. Especially not with achievements attached.

I personally want to see unique and fresh new pet features and not another popularity contest that possibly will add even more drama to the community of us pet-people. Like said just send a gift/mail/comment to a user if you adore their Pet(s), it has worked that way for 10 years so why not in the future? :)

P.S.: And should this suggestion get approved I hope we can deactivate it at least.

,

I am very sorry, but I am also not for, even though your idea even so democratic.

The alternative can be make a compliment to an other user. That's good enough and send gifts are a free choice. Some old rich users need nothing anymore and are content with some personal attention and admire of thair pets. Anyway send gifts is a free choice. Very nice but not a duty.

Kind of like the Like/Heart button for HAs and Posts?

I've seen several boards in the past years for that idea and I've mentioned it to too. I would personally LOVE to have the ability to heart pets both on their pet profiles -AND- via LEASHING (incentive to leash, yes?) as the heart could be put right next to the pet's name in the forums.

However, I love the idea because not all of us give a single bother about the pet spotlight.

The spotlight turns people horrible, petty, snarky, and entitled when something wins that isn't up to their personal standards. Less we forget recently when had a pet win the spotlight, and her profile stated the pet was sun and in reality it was common, and some self-entitled anon went as far as to make a hateful tumblr post about staff favoritism.

I hate the spotlight, and want nothing to do with it. However, I love the idea of the ability to pet heart because spotlight or not, seeing your pet (leashed or otherwise) with 20 hearts would mean so so much more to me than 1 (typically friend) nominating your pet, it having all the base requirements to win the spotlight, and then eventually winning via lottery-- only to have 4 "good job tl;dr but nice pictures" and 5 "your pet is bad and you should feel bad" remarks. Oh and of course "who drew your art, do you take commissions?" and maybe a bonus anon hate post on tumblr!

No no no. I'd rather have a heart feature you can enable disable via it's own page, that also let's you know how many hearts your pet has! And then just a heart on the leash, or on it's profile. That'd make me want to look at people's pets more, and would mean a lot to me to know people liked my pets. And it might sell more leashes.

I'd look for the suggestion boards for this from the past, but y'know.. forums are gone and this was at least a year or two ago.

It'd just be a popularity contest. I'm sure most people could say right now whose pets would have a ton of 'fame.' It wouldn't give pets attention that didn't have it before, it'd just give the pets who already have it even more. No thanks.

Thank you <3 That had to be my least favorite win and was sad cause it was one story I was rather proud of :p

But anyway, my input: As long as there is no way to negatively impact the hearts, I am all for this! For example, on neopets (hate to use it but it is the example I have), there is a way to rate the pet based on five stars. So a bunch of people who don't like a person can go to all their pets and rate them at a one star even if the pet is just wonderful. But doing it just as we do with avatar likes, that would prevent the negative aspect.

And I think you are kinda wrong. I know that not every pet is going to get tons of heart/likes, but there are some that are not technically "spotlight ready" that I love to pieces. It may be that they are not totally finished or it could be that the person doesn't even participate in spotlighting but still deserve kudos for a nice pet. I also know a lot of people that would be encouraged by something like this to work more on a pet.

Besides, the only way to see these likes would be to go to their profile...how would that give them any more attention since you were going there anyway?

That was a shining example of why I dislike the spotlight. Typically one can just ignore that mess by never looking at the daily spotlight comments, which I do (I avoid all of it haha) but the last thing the spotlight needs is any more cause for festering more animosity amongst users.

I would like to see pet hearts set up exactly like it is for HAs, end of story. You see a pet and check it out: if you like it heart it, if you don't care of it.. don't heart it. There should be no ranking system what-so-ever (I vaguely remember that from neopets, and my first thought was oh cool wait.. no.. no.), just heart or not to heart.

There should be no public tally of how many hearts a pet has (like a highscore table), there should be no competition along the lines of "these are the pet's the have the most hearts today!" because then it's just going back to claims of favoritism and numbers could be skewed by asking friends to heart their pets.

Just a simple heart feature that can be enjoyed by social recluses (like I have no friends, but wow someone likes my pets), social butterflies, spotlight people, non-spotlight people, etc. I don't always comment people when I like their pet(s), but if I could give them a +1 heart I would because it would mean a lot more than 5 individuals like my pet vs. just one who nominated it/staff who have no choice but to approve it if it follows the spotlight rules and requirements. They might HATE my pet's concept, but approve it anyways.

If users want to compare how many hearts their pet's have, then they could just make a board like I believe (don't quote me on this) people do with HA likes?

But this shouldn't be anything other than a page to enable/disable the feature, and see how many hearts your pet has gotten overall (maybe day vs. overall).

I would support this if and only if it were implemented like HA likes. As in, only the pet's owner can see how many likes a pet has, likes only, no dislikes, and no achievements or rewards attached. I would also like to see the ability to deactivate it if you want.

The reason I like the idea is because some people don't want to follow the pet spotlight rules for their pet. For one example, maybe they don't know how to code or make art, and they would rather have their pet be completely their own work instead of commissioning everything, but their pet's story is amazing. A lot of the spotlight rules are pretty subjective, and there are plenty of pets out there that are really creative, but don't meet the spotlight guidelines and would never get accepted.

Not everyone aims to win the spotlight, not everyone wants to follow those rules. A pet should be "finished" when the owner says it's finished, not when some arbitrary, subjective rules say it's finished. Just because a pet isn't finished yet, doesn't mean it's not good or doesn't deserve appreciation.

Aaaand then there's this rule: "Any pets that straddle the borderline of what is acceptable, e.g., pets of an extremely sexual nature or those with extremely graphic undertones, may be rejected." Those pets will never be accepted into the spotlight, but that doesn't mean that they aren't well-done or creative.

Lastly, anything that lets me be unsocial while still letting me show appreciation to people gets support from me. Anonymous gifts are not good enough because I still have to write a message, and as you can see, I tend to ramble. And what about people who have non-friend gifts disabled?

tl;dr: Support because I think it would be nice for some people to get recognition for their pets, even if they don't follow all the spotlight rules. Winning the spotlight is not every person's goal.

I don't think I am. What you do may be different than what person a, b, c and d do. As well, almost every single thing on this site (and many others) turns into a popularity contest. The pets with the most fame will be the pets of well-known people. Not that they'll need to 'advertise' their pets, just that there will already be a lot of traffic on their pets' pages and a lot of people are 'friends' with them. Yes, some pets of people that aren't as well known will get some fame; there may even be a few of them in the top ten of pets with fame. However, the majority will be the pets of well-known people. That's just how things work.

But the great thing about this is that it doesn't matter. There would be no high score for the most likes, no requirements to get likes, no negative likes. I don't get why being a popularity contest would even matter. There is no incentive to getting more likes...it is just something that motivates people.

Right now there are people who think that they are not good enough because they do not have spotlight wins. If I can make their day with a like and that motivates them to add something to their pet, then who cares if the next pet has 100000000000 likes?

This thread mentions achievements, though. If it worked like the avatar likes, yeah, it doesn't really matter. If there's a high scores table, achievements, etc. then it does matter.

Really though, I don't think pet fame needs to be a thing. I don't care if it gets implemented (so long as it functions just like the avatar likes), but I don't think we need it either.

I agree with all of that. I don't see any harm in being able to like a pet / a pet's profile in the same way I can like a human avatar or a post. I'd like it if it were set up like the human avatar likes, "likes today / likes total". And like said, pets of popular users might have more likes. But if it was like avatar likes and only the owner could see it, what would it matter if someone popular is having a lot of friends like their pets for self-gratification if only they could see the likes number? I'm always overjoyed when I find that someone has liked my avatar, it's usually 1 or 2 likes a day every now and then, but it makes me feel good. If people could like my pets like that, I'd feel 100x better, especially since a lot more goes into pet profiles than dressing up a human avatar base.

I've got a pet like that. He's pretty much finished and I've put a lot of work into his profile coding and art but he's never going to be nominated and I know that. I knew that when I made him and I knew that when I finished him. But just because of that doesn't mean I wouldn't be happy if some passerby somehow found their way to his page and gave it a like.

as mentioned by others, i'd like to see something like this implemented if it was similar to HA likes- something you and you alone can see, with no achievements or HSTs attached. we've already got a pet popularity contest, and no one gives a hot shit about it anymore anyway (spotlight winners struggle to break 10 comments per post, unless it's a fanpet representing a popular fandom or, more likely, drama in the comments)

but on the other hand, i like the idea of people being able to quietly leave their appreciation for someone else's pet(s), without necessarily having to start a conversation (which i already know can disuade a lot of people from ever voicing their opinions, whatever their reason for silence may be). strangely enough, i have on more than one occasion had people expressing disappointment when i clear my pet profiles (happens from time to time), despite me never knowing that anyone besides myself was looking at them. some people just like to admire from a distance, and i think an anonymous 'like' system could cater to that mentality

besides, if HAs can have this function, why can't pets? pet likes would mean way more to me than HA likes ever would, and yet there those are

If it does happen it should be coded to be optional per pet and overall, accumulate by individual pet ID, and reset once a pet is pounded or sent to another user. I agree with 's first paragraph as well.
