You laminate them. They sell machines for that pretty much everywhere, sometimes cheaply too. When I make bookmarks for myself and family though, I use clear packing tape. Tricky to work with at times and sometimes not the prettiest, but it protects them and keeps them stiff if you use plain printer, sketch book, or notebook paper (hand draws mine).

When you print it out, you'll want to use a thicker paper (cardstock or thicker), so it holds up. Normal printer paper is super flimsy, even after lamination most of the time.

Are you still in school? You might be able to get a school librarian to do it for you. Then it will look super nice. I would suggest making quite a few of them if you do that.

I also had a thought not sure if it is the look you are wanting, but what about high gloss modpodge on the front? It wouldn't be covered in plastic if that is the look you are going for, but it would be shiny. I would use thicker paper with it though and be careful because if you did your work with marker or something it's possible it could bleed since mod podge will make your work wet. Just thought I'd throw that thought out there. :)
