Alright, so, the original The Exorcist is one of the most famous horror movies of all time and is pretty much on everyone's "it scares the shit out of me" list. But recently, it's like Hollywood is trying to make another horror blockbuster by... making a possession movie every three months.

That might be an exaggeration, but I swear I've seen at least five of them in the past year and a half. Why? Personally, I'm getting kind of sick of them. I get where the draw is based off of a "this could happen" feeling, because these incidents are supposedly based off of actual events, but it seems like the movies aren't even paying any respect to the "actual events". (I quote because I have some apprehension about movies that say they're based on actual events.) It seems like they're just trying to get cheap scares out of making people twist their bodies in unnatural ways and act demonic, in my opinion.

I just saw an ad for the newest one on Subeta and was like, "Nooo, Subeta, nooo :c"

Haha, but anyway, what about you guys? Do you like them? Do you not? What makes you like or not like them?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this trend. .__. I go to imdb regularly to check out the movie trailers and I swear every time I check there's an abundance of horror movies. Not just possession movies. Overall, scary movies. Zombies, apocalypses, vampires, the undead, ghosts, supernatural, werewolves, witches, whatever. Maybe they're the new "it" genre for Hollywood. I don't know. At this point, everything feels rehashed. Maybe Hollywood wanted the world to end in December 2012 haha. Or maybe they just want to cash in on peoples' anxieties.

We need less possession movies and more slasher flicks, like in the 90's.

Very true. Don't get me wrong, I love horror, but it sure seems like most of these movies are very poorly done or trying to, like you said, cash in on everyone's recent infatuations with zombies, vampires, and werewolves. Even horror games have gotten kind of lame, imo. I guess I kind of focused in on possession movies because they seem to catch my attention more? And so I notice them more than I do other horror movies, I guess. But it's hard not to notice them when people are convulsing and roaring out of the corner of your eye.

Ahaha, I'm more of a psychological horror person, but I would so take slashers over possession movies any day. But are we talking like, Jason, where we know who's doing the killing, or something like... idk, Scream, where do you don't know? Or does it not matter so long as people are dying? lmao

I just don't get what's so scary about exorcism movies. It just feels like...well, once you've seen one you've seen them all. The plot is almost always the same thing and I just don't find them scary at all. Personally, I'm a huge fan of horror movies which basically end up with people in old insane asylums. I have no idea what it is about those films, but they always scare the shit out of me. >>;

Oh yeah, there's nothing wrong with the actual genre itself. I like a good scare every now and then. 8D I agree about the general quality. ;l Having too much of anything is overkill imo. Oh well, fads eventually die. Just like the westerns of old Hollywood did. I wonder how long it will take for that to happen.

That's pretty much exactly it! I think you have to be very creative to make a good movie out of it, but most of them rehash the same storyline, yep. You put into words exactly what I was thinking, haha. Ooh, you know, I remember watching one with an asylum and it was so good and creepy, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. I don't suppose you have any suggestions? Might accidentally bump into it along the way.

Hopefully not too much longer. But then there'll be a new fad and we'll get sick of that. Hollywood's vicious cycle, lmao. I just hold the optimism that getting horror movies out of the spotlight will let more work be put into them. The last one I saw a commercial for that I wanted to see was Mama, but I'm afraid it'll disappoint me too. :c

Well it's kind of hard to change up a storyline when the main focus of the movie has to be about someone (usually a little girl) getting possessed. There are only so many ways you can invent a new way to get possessed and few movies I've seen so far seem to have branched out that much. I can't really think of one off of the top of my head besides "Grave Encounters". Personally I thought it was scary as shit, after the first half hour or so things just get so scary so fast out of nowhere. Some people hate it though so I guess it's kind of a personal taste thing. And hate to creep on your other post, but oh shit Mama was really good. I went to see it the other day with my friends and jesus dick scary kid movies are freaky. I really liked it, it wasn't as scary as some of the other horror movies I"ve seen but it was pretty good so I'd recommend seeing it for sure.

Both!

Scream is my favorite horror series, but Nightmare on Elm Street is a really close second! And, Child's Play prior to Bride of Chucky

I hate those kinds of movies. Hollywood has a way of taking something people like and giving it to them so many times they are like "ssttoooppppp!!!!" but Hollywood is like "nooo, you love ittt!"

- It reminds me to make sure not to open doorways to things i have no business inviting to this plane. I'm not the biggest horror fan, at all. I don't like icky things and scary things.... but a friend was asking me for horror recommendations, which led to us having a very animated discussion over lunch about the movies, and I couldn't remember a lot.... Thanks now I can tell her to watch Grave Encounters. I haven't even seen it yet, and there's a 2 apparently....
