Quote
Pauline, like more than 3,000 other children in Northern Uganda, has been struck by the mysterious syndrome that has doctors and scientists puzzled and has shattered lives in this rural community.

Nodding disease gets its name from the strange nodding-like symptoms that children display in the first stages of a seizure. But doctors on the ground and at the U.S.-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that is the least profound effect.

Pretty horrifying, to say the least. :/

Dear god that's horrifying. Especially seeing the parents have no choice but to tied their children up to make sure they don't hurt themselves or start dangerous fires. :(

This sounds like the beginnings of an M. Night Shyamalan movie... I hope they find the cause of this soon. I'm glad they at least have some clues to start searching. This sounds absolutely terrible. :(

She was normal when they were born. Now she just moves around and serves no purpose," Lagat says.

That's nice... a mother telling the press that her daughter is useless because of a new disease.

I hope they find what's causing it, but like many other diseases, it will take time and be lots of deaths.

I'm not sure if that's scarier than Morgellons or not.... -shudders- Now that's a disturbing though. A disease that can compete with Morgellons....

This reminds me of the Salem witch trails, where the 'possessed' children were just having attacks due to something they were eating. =|

This illness sounds like it's the definition of 'bizarre'.

I read about this a few weeks ago. It's a scary disease because they don't know what's causing it. I hope they find the cause soon.

Ah it's been happening since the 60s and just recently hit Uganda. They believe it's being caused by a parasite that also causes River blindness since it has been found in 97% of the children.

That is so sad. And scary. :( I have a feeling there are a lot of diseases out there in countries that aren't as developed as those in the west that we don't know about because no one's there to report it.
