Pretty much the question in the subject. I have searched and searched the forums tonight looking for this answer. I couldn't even find it via google searching.

items from the shops in the Underground are useful elsewhere in the site. Also, Skitters owes us living folk who helped him out, so the shopkeepers there are mostly willing to lets us purchase from the back door.
