I'm not currently very religious or anything but I'm going to church tomorrow. I'm very nervous I'll seem out of place or something since I've honestly never been to church apart from funerals or other occasions. As a result I have no clue what I'm doing.

Concern number one, what am I supposed to wear? All I really own as far as bottoms go are jeans so can I wear a nice top and shoes with those, or are you supposed to look formal? Also, what exactly do you do at church since all I know is what I've seen on tv and such. I assume we sing and listen to people talk but apart from that... what exactly do they do in church? It's Lutheran btw, not catholic.

What to wear sort of depends on the church, but I think in general, the younger you are the more you can get away with casual clothes. Also, if the church describes their service as contemporary rather than traditional, it is likely to be more casual.

Most churches I've been to have some sort of announcements at the beginning, you usually greet people around you, sing some hymns, and listen to the sermon. They may also offer communion, which at most non-catholic christian churches anyone who believes in God/Jesus is welcome to participate. There will be an offering, and probably more hymns at the end.

- Most churches give you a program or printout of what's going to happen during the actual service, and tell you what book you need, o if they're fancy, read the screen up in front. I wear whatever I want, jeans or a dress. Jeans in winter, though, dress in summer, and a random shirt or top, tank, Pink Floyd long-sleeved layer tee, melting guitars tee.... my beloved KFJC drunk zombie bunny shirt.... I have no' shame ;) If they're uptight they'll look at 'any' newcomer weird, but most at least on the surface try to make newbies welcome. So, hopefully you went and had a nice time.

Sorry for a late reply, but I grew up Lutheran. You can get away with wearing jeans and a nice top. As for things to expect: lot's of standing up than sitting down and so on. And singing that isn't really signing. And most Lutheran churches do a small breakfast/lunch... If there's anything Lutherans do best, it's a potluck. And expect long ass sermons to the point you're about to start pulling your hair out and dying of thirst.

If you have any more questions, let me know. I grew up in a Lutheran church. I don't attend anymore but I do have some fond memories lol

I've never been in a Lutherain Church before, I grew up in Church Of Christ. We usualy start off with greating and talking about with random members, for about say 10 minutes or a little less than that. We then have announcements concerning the Church, then we have a word of prayer- sing a couple of songs and our Comunion is offered to those who want to partake of it, and we do this every Sunday morning and Sunday night for those who couldn't make it durring the morning services. We sing a couple more songs, a gentleman reads a small passage of Scripture from the Bible and then another word of prayer is offered, one more song is led and then the Preacher starts to preach for about 25-30 minutes. After that two more songs are sung, and then we dismiss wieht a word of prayer and every Sunday we have a small lunch for anyone who wants to come. Our dress code is: Anything that you think is appopriate, we do not care what you wear just as long as you are there to worship God and Jesus then we're happy to have you. =]

hope this helped out some, and glad to hear you're attending church, too.;)

I wear jeans and a nice shirt to church all the time- most weeks, in fact.

I think most Christian, non- Catholic churches do pretty much the same thing. Wander, sing, greet one another, sing, sing, announcements, offering/sing, pre sermon, sermon, closing. Communion once a month.

When I DO go to church (from the urgings of my dad which is annoying because I don't live at home any more) I just wear jeans and a shirt. Any shirt, really. My church is pretty casual (and crazy).

It does depend on the church. You mentioned Lutheran so I would guess they'd be okay with jeans and a nice shirt.
