I left him outside for no longer then five minutes to let him use the bathroom and next thing you know when im preparing his food I smell a skunk I quickly see him and his eyes were shut ! my poor baby I called the vet they had me mix hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap together and use it to remove the smell but they said don't get it anywhere near the eyes or nose and unfortunately that is where the smell is has anybody ever encountered this and have any ideas?
Tomato Sauce? ...you are never supposed to get stuff on your dogs face though...as far as I know...
Ack, ewwww. I know that quite well, my aunt's dog got sprayed next door, the houses reeked of skunk for two weeks.
Never get any of the supposed skunk smell remedies in the animal's face. If he did get the spray in his eyes, just straight up water and a clean washcloth. Besides, nothing works, it'll only weaken the smell or mask it.
The best things remain to stick your dog in the tub and give him a thorough scrubbing as much as the both of you can stand. Skunk spray basically has to deteriorate on its own.

Oh, no! I'm so, so sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, like the others have said, skunk spray is a pretty potent mix of oils and enzymes that's just gotta break down on its own over time. Peroxide, acids (like tomato juice) and other things can help speed the process, but none are safe for mucous membranes like the eyes, nose, ears, or mouth. If the face got nailed, pupper's just gotta stay gnarly for a few days. Give him a good bath, but be careful to not damage his skin with too much scrubbing or too harsh a soap. Be sure to dry him, too, like you normally would to prevent skin infections.
Good news is that the spray isn't harmful. It reeks, but your pup won't be hurt. He just won't be super cuddly for a few days. Unless he comes up allergic. Keep an eye out for ulcerations, inflammation, discomfort (not due to odor), or other signs of allergy or or nasty reaction. It's pretty rare, but it can happen. Good luck dealing with it! Hopefully it'll be once in a lifetime for your dog :/
thank you all i gave him a bath and in just matter of two days he actually isnt smelling that bad, and yeah he just has to deal with smelling stinky for a little bit but its ok i still cuddle him and give him kisses lol even though my boyfriend insists i dont cuddle him but i cant help it he is my big baby by the way he is a pitbull
I'd say to used tomato sauce. That's what my mom used to get the smell off her old dog. Poor doggy... hugs
Oh no! Poor baby. I've never had that happen with my pets, but I heard tomato sauce works (like others said above). No more chasing skunks, haha.
Oh noo D:
Our english mastiff just got sprayed about a month ago, when anyone kisses her face you can still smell it. But you did right by calling the vet, I hope your puppy gets better and isn't too shaken up by this!
thanks :D tiny(my dog) say thanks too doggykisses!! haha it's so funny he is big baby now when I let him out at night I think he knows better now he always stay by side outside lol yeah I still give him kisses and I can smell it I tell him he is a stinky butt and he just wags his big tail and gives me kisses lol
