To those on Subeta that eat healthy - other than a shake - what is a healthy lunch alternative to a sammich? Kevin and I are having trouble finding an easy, grab and go (mostly) lunch that is filling and healthy. I can get through my day with a few snacks and entirely skip lunch but Kevin can't really snack during the day and he needs something easy (like a sammich) that he can carry and eat while he's working. Limited access to a fridge and he doesnt have a place to put dishes.

I can come up with plenty of snack ideas but lunch is by far the hardest to plan. Even breakfast is easy because we can always do prepackaged yogurts or oatmeals and limit ourselves to one.

dinner is a bit of a challenge for me so im open to ideas there too. Dinner might actually be the hardest now that i think about it because it's going to be portion vs health content vs is it filling us up

we're used to bigger portions because we make something (meat, starch, veggie usually) and splitting it down the middle - neither of us like leftovers but i'm willing to eat something (fresh) more than once a week.

Kevin wants no part of making it - this will give me a bit more flexibility because he's kind of picky (but for the most part we don't like the same foods)

Dinners.....leafy green vegetables, stuffed bell peppers, black and brown rice, tofu, all kinds of fish chicken and turkey grilled or baked, okra, teriyaki vegetables, green beans, snow peas, cauliflower or broccoli, steamed vegetables(taste good with vinegar).

Lunch...we normally cook at our house so Idunno what'd be good for on the go. I don't think a healthy, turkey and veg. sandwich on wheat bread with some juice and a cup of NO SUGAR- add honey or fruits- plain jane yoghurt would hurt. Or a lunchbox with chicken salad.

We eat pretty healthy, normally vegetarian, and my bf is into body building. Look at recipes online. Think fresh. Yer.

What about pasta salads? I make a variety of pasta salads all the time in the summer because they're so easy to make, customize-able, and filling depending on what you put in them. You have to be careful with what you put in them though, since a lot of recipes are kind of unhealthy. You could also try summer soups if he could put it in a cup and heat it up or something(unless it's a cold soup); they're usually pretty light though. Probably you would want to eat like a biscuit or something else with them.

Pasta salads are easy to do and you can add what you want.Wrap are also a good and quick lunch/dinner. I usually eat a little more classy for dinner though.Stuffed tomatoes, peppers, potatoes .. something quick but healthy depending on what you add of course :)

I'm a picky eater...so that's a problem. I hate salad, cheese, raw veggies, sandwiches, etc etc

breakfast: Milk lunch: whatever's leftover from the previous night's dinner, or Ramen noodles dinner: usually Chinese food; there're veggies, like green beans, things like bean curds, and meat, like pork

Here are some tips: Drink a glass of water before sitting down for dinner and dont eat your meal quickly. The water will help to keep you hydrated as well as make you feel full without over eating. Your stomach actually takes 20 minutes to realize that it is full, so eating slowly will also help you to not over eat. :)

As for actual food: Make sure you're getting protein and complex carbohydrates, as these are what is going to really fill you up; leafy greens and brightly colored vegetables to make sure you are getting your vitamins.

For the stuffing: use wholemeal products (noodles, rice, bread....).

Here is a website with some really good recipes. :) I've been trying to start eating healthier, and I've made a few of their meals. They all come out really good.

lol well everything will make you fat if you eat too much of it :P The point is to eat healthy proportions with healthy ingredients. For example you probably would avoid a lot of pasta salads that are creamy since they aren't really made with your health in mind. You say you guys are used to big proportions and filling foods but that's probably not going to happen if you want to eat extremely healthy. Like pasta is very filling but it's not exactly the healthiest thing in general that you could eat(it's not bad either, though; you just have to watch what you eat). You have to compromise somewhere, especially if you're serving for a picky eater.

Carbohydrates are converted to glucose the fastest in the body. If your body isnt using this glucose for energy, it will be stored as fat.

So eat smaller portions and balance with exercise and you should be good! :D

Keep in mind white breads are basically just filler; they have NO nutritional value. If youre going to be eating breads, go with whole grain.

Steamed veggies~ carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, sometimes onion. Steam it all together depending on the amount you put in the cook time is apx 20 minutes Its either a great side or a wonderful veggie lunch, You can also cook salmon

this is not entirely healthy but a favorite side, 1/2 or a whole head of cabbage and a 1/2 lb bacon, cook all together until cabbage is forked tender. make sure your pan is large enough to stir frequently. There is no need to add any thing, the bacon grease will be fine but if you do find it starting to stick add a little bit of water. What ever you do do not let the cabbage start to burn or the whole thing is ruined in my opinion. LOL i have been craving this and finally had it 3 days ago :)

good luck with your healthy lunch collection ideas :)
