I had a goal to get my first pet, i chose a bearded dragon. Well i had only so much money and instead of my goal pet, i find a cheap iguana, so i went and brought her. called her Esme and she is healthy and still a bit frisky but she will break in soon.

so anyone else ever brought their first pet and felt great about it?

Aww, congrats! New pets are always the best :D

I haven't ever bought a pet myself- I still live at home so my parents are always in charge of what animals we get, lol. I'd love to adopt my own dog someday, but unfortunately my parents don't really like dogs so I'll have to wait until I get my own place. My boyfriend's little sister bought a chinchilla the other day though (it's name is Chinchi... how creative) and he's been tons of fun. I was scared he would never get used to us and come out of his little hiding spot, but now he's so friendly and loves to jump in our hands and be rubbed behind the ears.

I.. don't really remember my first pet. I think it was a mouse when I was really little. My mom is an animal lover and so am I, so there has never been a time when we haven't had at least a handful of animals.

But anyways, congratulations on the new pet! Remember, if you ever come across an issue with your pet, Google is a very useful resource.

Oh, bearded dragons are so cool! Can't say I have personal experience with them, but I always look at them whenever I'm at a pet store.

My first pet was a dog that the family adopted when I was in third grade. She passed away this February, sadly. She was such a good dog and just about as mellow as it could get.

Have fun with your iguana! :)

I was stoked that my parents gave me their old 5 gallon glass tank. The story goes like this:

I had originally bought some frogs (African Dwarfs) and they were in a small container. After a few months, I felt really bad for them and wanted to buy a fish tank. My parents said "We have the old 5 gallon and it still works". So, I had out my frogs in there. I had bought three more frogs. After three died, I got some fish. I have way TOO many for my tank, but I want to take everything home :x I have 6 guppies, 1 betta, 2 mollies and down to one frog. I also have another betta in a small tank in my living room :D

Congrats on the new pet! It is always a great experience. What kind of setup do you have for your iguana? I've read that they can get fairly expensive to feed and house, I believe they need something like a 6 foot by something enclosure when they're full grown. I had one for a few months but my family wasn't really prepared for caring for one, he was pretty cool though!

I swear i'm not trying to be rude, but i'm probably going to come across like I am. I don't see how you couldn't afford a bearded dragon, but could afford both an iguana and what it would require to PROPERLY house and care for it. Seeing as they can become several feet long, they need very large tanks which from experience are pretty expensive, as is the proper lighting and heating. These are things it will die without. I've unfortunately seen it happen.

[edit] Oh, and for relevance the first pet I actively remember picking out and owning was a black and white cat I named Chili. I don't know why, but I did.

My sister's cat gave birth a month ago, and I get to keep one of the kittens as soon as he's old enough to be on his own. Hella excited. :3

I got two new pets very recently, actually. I moved out of my parents house and into a new house with my boyfriend. It's lovely living as just as, but I was feeling a bit down in the dumps when I got home and he was still working, so we decided to adopt two cats.

I'm now the proud mum to my beautiful babies Bibby and Gatsby! Click here for a picture of them!

I adopted Bibby from Romania (he's the tabby) and Gatsby from a local shelter (obviously the tortie). I love them both so much. ^_^

At home with parents, there are four dogs who I miss every single day. I love them so much, too, and I wish I could see them more often.

Lucky you, I've wanted an iguana for quite a while! I haven't exactly bought a first pet yet, but when I do I really would like a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. ^-^ I'm so obsessed with them , and I've been reading up on them a lot. It won't be my first dog since we have had family dogs before, so I will have experience when I get my corgi!

The only pet I'd ever consider buying is a Jack Daniels Terrier. But they're not real, Alas!

Old, and obsolete.
