Heya all, I'm looking to expand my portfolio, and cater it towards the game industry. The problem is that I'm not feeling particularly creative right now in terms of character design. I'm looking to use people's character references, make that character in 3D and give you a nice image in the process. A fully textured and rendered model of your character either waist-up or full body. (Though I'm really aiming to do a full body)

I've chosen a character now, and will be updating this thread with the progress as I go through the steps of making her a 3D character.

CURRENT PROGRESS:
Doing face and hair, and chest plate. Set up lighting for final render.

Hey, your characters look good, but I'm looking for something more specific, such as a character with a weapon, or special clothes that reside around a modern/scifi theme. :3

I'll keep you in mind, though I am really looking for front and back views/fullbody images (I noticed a few of your characters have fullbodies, but I still have a specific theme in my head right now).

Your work looks simply wonderful and I wish you all the best with your portfolio. Now, I guess the best...ughm...illustrated character of mine is Alaya Vipin Engel. She's female and she's sci-fi, so I hope she's of interest to you.

Character references: Engel's rudimentary charsheet If it doesn't open then here's her charahub page - the image should be under ''Images'' along with a portrait I did of her a few years ago and a character age meme. Here's also some uniform designs I made for a roleplay with her - she'd most likely be wearing either the captain or lietenant uniform (though without the horrible white garter-things, I have no idea what went through my head when I drew them seeing as the outfit already has gun holsters) or, failing that, civilian clothes which are still cut in a way to enhance androgynity i.e. flatten the chest, widen the shoulders and so forth. Her favorite weapon is called the UCCELLO, however I'm no good with firearms so the design might be heavily flawed and you can substitute it with any sort of firearm (or laserarm) you deem fit. Notes: I don't mind any sort of outfit (the ones above are just suggestions), but I'd rather not have her be overly sexualized. Or if, then in an assertive, dominant way. She is more-or-less a soldier first and a woman second (or fourth? Fifth?) She's very dear to me as a character, but if you don't find her inspiring enough then I won't mind.

I'm thinking she might be right up your alley?: I'm afraid I haven't got any other refs. I'm pretty useless at drawing sci-fi/mech, haha. So, uh, artistic liberty for anything you aren't sure about if you choose to do her for me? Unless I can whip up a sketch later for you of a back/side view later when I get home from work if you're interested.

Ohmygod, I would absolutely DIE if you could do Mason. ;u;

Mason Ref (I could get my friend to draw up a better view of everything as well)

Mason is meant to be a cyber 'punk' (like...a cybergoth, but instead, a punk?) He is living in a highly advanced technologic society where media runs EVERYTHING. What the ref DOESN'T show is that implanted INTO his arm is a screen Kind of like this but not this exactly. It's basically a screen that is fitted into his arm. His clothing is whatever you'd like to make it but usually consists of a lot of buckles, light up clothing and technologic looking stuff.

As to a pose, any would be fine for him but probably hiding behind a wall or something while lights go by or even spray painting 'the Truth' (about the world he lives in and how the media runs everything) on the walls (hence why he's covered in paint. c:

Hey there, would you be interested in him? Not exactly modern/sci-fi but he was sort of based of typical anime-ishy things that could go into a design ^^

Alright everyone, I really wanted to do a female scifi character, so I've chosen - But I will be taking liberties with the design, and probably turn it into a miniature project to add to my portfolio.

I've begun to base, but I'll need to do some sketches of her clothes, as I really wanted to tailor the design to look as though it is from a game or a film, so the fact she is a soldier really helps for this.

Edit: Alright, so I did an outfit for her that is loosely based on your designs and other sources, keeping white as the main theme. I replaced the frills on the shoulders of your designs with panels in the suit, which are in roughly the same places as your design, I've mainly cut off the entire coat, but tried to keep her chest flat and her shoulders quite wide.

Bigger size I've modelled the 3D base for her body, but the rest of it is going to take a long time, probably a few days, as I'm going to be texturing and rendering it all to the highest standard I can. Yay.

Aw, too bad, I liked the coat. ;) However I'm very pleased with the outfit you've come up for her. Especially the lines on her chests and - for some reason - the belt buckle. I'll be looking forward to seeing the finished project. I swear, I haven't been this excited for ''fan-art'' in...well, a very long time. May I ask whether you have any pose ideas in mind already?

- I'm not sure. I'll probably do two poses; One for my portfolio and one for you. If you want, I can do you a practical stance, or even a turnaround for the character once she's finished. 3D is flexible in that, after she's done, I can pose her in any pose I or yourself want to and if the lighting is right, she should look good.

Though it's going to take a while. I tried to use Maya for the second time yesterday, and ended up rage quitting, haha. :D But it's a learning process I have to get used to first, so this might take up until next week at least. Learning Maya was the reason for making this thread, so you'll need to bare with me.

Edit: Okay, so Zbrush has retopology buttons that I only just found out about, panic over!

I've begun the chest armor and the head, but both still have a long way to go. Haven't even begun on the trousers. Keeping it low-poly, but I still need to add in the hair. I'm considering just drawing it in, as I doubt my computer can handle hair rendering.

I guess it's good then that she doesn't have a lot of hair? :D Hm, now I got interested and had to Google ''retopology''. I'd just like to say that what you're doing is fantastic. There have been times when I attempted to teach myself 3D modeling via Blender, but even after the tutorials and FAQs I couldn't advance past simple geometrical shapes and nowadays I just use it occasionally for perspective references. So I really do envy people who know how to make things in 3D.

Hope you won't run into any further issues with Maya. =)
