I've been trying to move on in the plot, but it keeps saying that none of my pets are able to battle. The pet is fed and happy, not in a current battle, and healed 100%. I'm not sure what else to try. Help?

Is your pet your own (I mean have you created it?) or have you gotten it from another user?

I adopted the pet about a year and a half ago.

Ah alright. Just had to be sure, if you had gotten it from another use via the transfer system then that may explain it. Not sure why your pet can't battle...
