I'm not an artist. I just like to draw.

For whatever reason it may be.. I believe that anyone that draws, writes, photographs, sculpts---- creates, is an artist.
Everyone is different, So it's really hard to define what makes an artist from someone's characteristics. To me, there's only one thing that's the same.. That one thing you can find in ALL artists, and that is their ability to create.
I believe that if you can create something, you are an artist.
... I answered it in my own convoluted way. :-(
I don't really know what makes an artist. I know that to be an artist you need to be able to accept criticism. I know that to be an artist you need to go through a phase where you think you're hot shit, and you need to get yourself beaten into the ground in order to humble yourself. There are lots of different things that makes you one. I still don't think I'm an artist though.

Sure you're an artist if you have a good concept of the basics in art, color theory... shadows and lights... anatomy... All that jazz. ...... But really, I think you're more of a "true" artist if you can take real life concepts and make your own style with it. Don't follow a guidebook or copy someone else's style.
Also, more just if you can enjoy it for yourself. If your're only drawing for attention, or tracing some Anime crap and not really putting any effort into it just so you can "impress" someone, I find that a very pathetic excuse to be an artist. Do it for yourself, not for others' approval. ... I'm a snob when it comes to this topic. Don't ask me about it. XDD
I think what makes a person a artist is the ability to open up and use the other side of your brain, creativity isn't a basic thought, it requires a lot more. :) Whatever the art is music, drawing, photography, designing etc. It shows that they are much higher thinkers, artists are like a different breed. =D
someone who doesn't stop what they're doing, never gives up and constantly improves.
obv that's not really me. :I
"something from nothing" Its also a concept used when questioning whether people who mix or re-mix songs are really artists at all. Personally if you're making something be seen in a different way than it was before, you're artistic.
I think an artist is someone who sees things a different way. I believe an artist looks at the world as inspiration for their work. the colours, shapes, textures and emotions around us go into the works of an artist. I agree with an artist is someone who can create, and is not afraid to do so, and be different
HELL TO THE FUCKING YEAH (if you do them in a way nobody has ever done before)
if you make something that isnt money.
If I pay you to come to my house and make fart noises with your armpits, are you no longer an artist? D:
now i'm a sell-out.
An artist is someone who can grow and adapt to new things, and be able to see the world, or even just an apple in a different way from someone else. An artist can give something with no meaning... a meaning, and a new light. And artist is someone who can create, and inspire.

What a brilliant way to put it. :)
I think I am going to be an artist when I get my BA in Fine Arts.
Defining what makes an artist is as tough as defining what makes something beautiful. Some things don't have a clear definition - their meaning is altered constantly from person to person.
The general term implies 'those who create' or those who effect meaning or purpose where such things may not have been readily observed. This can be skewed over such a broad arena! Just as there are traditional artists [musicians, sketchers, painters, writers, seamstress/tailors, architects etc.], the athlete who trains all their life to perform in the Olympics is an artist. Most of the other EMTs and Medics I work with - the things I've seen them do in the back of coding ambulances; well they are nothing short of artists to me.
Certainly, defining what makes an artist is a personal endeavor. : )
