So the writing phase for our exam 'class combo'-synopsis has begun and I really want to actually make something kick-ass instead of half-assed just this once.
The overall topic is "BEING ON" where we have to include and write about something involving modern technology. Since facework and how you present yourself is also part of this (majorly facebook actually) I chose to focus on personal branding, specifically on tumblr.com. It's a relatively new network in comparison to others and I thought I'd go with something other than facebook, since most people are probably going to be focusing on that since it's the most known personal branding-network.
What my point with this thread is to gain some inspiration towards this damned synopsis and ask general questions for anyone who uses tumblr, or knows of tumblr.
The questions:
I really, really appreciate any kind of help! And, mods, if this isn't placed correctly [IDK where to put it actually... just not in 'homework help' since this is something larger than just mere homework] move it as to where you see fit.
This sounds like an interesting project! My classes never set tasks like this :C
The answers:
++ Do you see the personal branding factor? What do you mean by personal branding? How you express yourself/your personality through tumblr? If that's the case, I suppose I have a small 'about me' page for potential 'followers' to find out more about me if they wish to and I post some personal posts. But like I said, it's primarily a blog of things that inspire me.
~ hope this helps!xo
As for the question you set at the "personal branding" part it's mostly about how (if) you're branding yourself in a specific way. How do you present yourself? Are you very frontstage [lol Danish class terminology coming in here] or backstage?
Frontstage = Sort of putting on a facade. Backstage = More personal aspects.
I think I'll have to quote this and put it in my first post so other posters don't experience the same confusion...
+ Why do/don't you use tumblr? I don't use tumblr because I find it annoying. The micro-aspect is too light on content (other than maybe a photo or otherwise image blogger) and there is too much focus on re and cross posting, in my opinion. Posting a picture you didn't create (and the person you're posting it from didn't create) and adding effectively 'lol' isn't content, personal, etc.
++ Do you see the personal branding factor? No, not unless it was very very customized and filled with more content. And really, at that point, I think another platform would suit someone's needs much better, whether for personal branding or more professional.
+ What have you achieved/learnt from using tumblr? Not really applicable, but if I had to come up with something... comments are nice. Just seeing "______ reblogged this"x1000 is utterly pointless. At least "like" indicates how they feel about it.
+++ Anything else you'd like to add? Interesting project, and I don't think tumblr is all bad... it's more of a 'stream of consciousness' inspiration or creativity thing for me, or an image-only blogging platform (but really, I think there are other just fine options for that). It's just all the people who use it for random dumb shit like nothing but straight reposting that really bring it down as a platform imo.
+ Why do/don't you use tumblr? I use it because it's an easy creative outlet. I can keep things I find inspiring all in one place, and I don't necessarily have to worry about socializing with people there. It's an easy way to get feedback on things like my art or photography, but that's not my main focus or goal.
++ Do you see the personal branding factor? I'm very straightforward with what I post and share about myself and my life. I'm not trying to impress anyone and I wouldn't gain anything from acting like I'm someone different. I have my information available for people who are interested, but overall I'm not really worried about showing myself off or being overly personal with my blog. I see a lot of people using tumblr as a way to get their business/talents out to a lot of people, and in most cases it seems to be successful but I think there are better ways to get yourself known than on that site.
+ What have you achieved/learnt from using tumblr? It actually keeps me up-to-date with a lot of things. I don't watch or read the news often, and in addition it's exposed me to a lot of things I don't think I'd have discovered otherwise, things involving culture and art and music and movies.
+ Why do/don't you use tumblr? I use Tumblr because it's basically like a diary to me. I can go on during the day, and write about my problems, fears, brag, write about whatever I would like to. I can post drawings, or photo's I've taken and get feedback. The idea of having "followers" makes me feel like I'm being supported, almost like I'm a little "famous". Which sounds stupid.. but I love it! I love tumblr, it's great.
