I am taking an art and visualization course, and I need to do an exercise with 3-5 other people. I have to show them an image, then listen to what they see and why they think the way they do. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone to talk to in real life right now, so this is where you come in.

All I need is for you to look at the following image for 60-90 seconds, then answer some questions about it. Since this has to be a dialogue, I will probably ping you and ask you more questions after you answer the first one.

The Image Click here

The Questions First I need to know a bit about you.

  1. What is your gender?
  2. What is your age or age range? (13-18, 19-25, 25-50, 30+)
  3. Where are you from? (Can give country or city. Whatever you are most comfortable with)

Questions about the art:

  1. What do you see, and why do you think that? (More questions after you answer this and I think about your answer)

Thank you very much!

  1. What is your gender? Female
  2. What is your age or age range? 19-25
  3. Where are you from? Philadelphia, PA

Questions about the art:

  1. What do you see, and why do you think that? I see a man on a road in a cold barren forest. I think it's cold because all of the trees are bare and the guy looks like he has on a heavy coat.

Gender: Female Age range: 19-25 From: UK (near London)

There's a man standing still in the middle of a tree-lined dirt avenue, in the countryside. It looks to be winter, due to the lack of leaves.

  3. Where are you from? California, United States (Don't want to give out the city publicly, but if you want to know you can message me.)

Questions about the art:

  1. What do you see, and why do you think that? I see a man in a suit who sort of looks like Sigmund Freud standing on a dirt path with bare trees. It seems more like fall to me than winter because the light is fairly strong and I associate dull light with winter.

Thanks for your responses! Here are a few follow-up questions I thought up. Does this image convey and sort of feelings to you? What was the first thing you thought of when you saw it? Do you think there is a deeper meaning to the image at all? Do you think this image is meant to persuade anyone?

Does this image convey and sort of feelings to you? What was the first thing you thought of when you saw it? The first thing I thought was that it looked like a lovely place to take a walk. It conveys a certain feeling of solitude and pensiveness to me because the man looks like he is lost in thought.

Do you think there is a deeper meaning to the image at all? Posssibly. Artists always have some sort of meaning behind their work even if it's subconscious. I have no idea what the meaning for this drawing in particular would be though. Perhaps it was a place the artist used to go in his/her past or something.

Do you think this image is meant to persuade anyone? I don't think so. I'm not really sure how it could be because it seems so simple and straightforward.

Does this image convey and sort of feelings to you? What was the first thing you thought of when you saw it? It seems very desolate, due to the barrenest of the landscape and the man being alone and just standing rather than walking. It has a cold and empty feel to it. The monotone colour and simple cross-hatch art-style probably contribute to this.

Do you think there is a deeper meaning to the image at all? Perhaps if there was background information provided by the artist. Alone as an image, it's too a open-ended to assign a specific deeper meaning.

Do you think this image is meant to persuade anyone? No, it doesn't seem to have a clear message that it is communicating.

Thanks, btw :)

  1. Female
  2. 19-25
  3. The Netherlands

Questions about the art:

  1. Well I see a path of something sandy or a mud like substance, because there's tracks in the path and there are trees besides that path. And on the path there's a man. I think he could be a farmer because his shoes are really big, they look like those wooden shoes. And he's not standing straight up, it looks like he has been working hard. He looks a bit worn out really. It looks like the sun is going up on the right side because the shadows of the trees are long and thin

I see a man standing amongst trees on a dirt path. He seems to be sad from the way his head is bowed slightly and it looks like he's looking at something, maybe his shadow? The trees are bare and stark which might resemble his apparent mood in the picture; lonely, desolate, cold. It seems as though there's something missing, like a companion (person or animal) that maybe he once took there in happier days, when the trees had leaves and it was warmer.

(My imagination is very vivid, whoops.)

Questions about the art:

  1. What do you see, and why do you think that? My first impression was "zombie". XD I mean, it could just be a guy, but the way he's holding his arms makes him look like a zombie, and the sort of blank face doesn't help. I also see some trees... they're well-drawn, the artist captured the impression of trees well even though they seem to have gotten lazy on the branches halfway through. And I see some other objects, between the trees. They could be anything. Maybe they're rolls of something to put on/near the road, (like maybe those bales of straw they use to control water flow when they're working on the road) or maybe they're downed trees, or maybe they're bodies, (like rolled up in carpets) but that doesn't really make any sense.

edit: added: Does this image convey and sort of feelings to you? What was the first thing you thought of when you saw it? It's a little mysterious, a tiny bit creepy. It was creepier at first (that was my first impression) but now mostly it just seems sort of quiet and melancholy. I think it was creepy because the guy is just the right distance away where you can't see his face yet, but he's not far away anymore. Do you think there is a deeper meaning to the image at all? Deeper than my first impression? Possibly. My first impression was not deep, hahaha. But it doesn't seem to have any hidden meanings. Do you think this image is meant to persuade anyone? It doesn't seem to be persuasive by itself. It would have to have some context, or a story or something to go with it.

I don't think you need any more people but I'm bored and don't want to go to bed?

First I need to know a bit about you.

  1. What is your gender? Male
  2. What is your age or age range? 19-25
  3. Where are you from? Britain

Questions about the art:

  1. What do you see, and why do you think that? Resignation and despair in the face of sickness. The man, humans, turning his back on synthesised wilderness. The trees are sickly and despite the illusion of control--the regimented lines of trees along side the drive--he can't actually do anything to protect the trees once illness has set in, he can cut down the affected ones, but they're all so close together they're all likely to be infected. He's crushed by his inability to protect something he helped make, but doesn't understand the irony of cutting down wild plants to build a road and plant new trees and crops. The sickliness of the trees speaks of worse things to come, without the cause of the illness being known it could also affect the crops, threatening not just man's pleasure (the superfluous trees) but the food stuffs he depends upon. The emptiness of the skies implies drought and emptiness with nothing coming to elevate the man's concern. The deep ruts in the road indicate that everyone else has already left, abandoning the man to his fate, even if in the long run the lack of food here in this backwater place will eventually catch up with them.
