I thought if you were a zombie in previous years, you see whatever items were available in those years in the Zombie Den for sale.

I was a zombie the first year but not again until this year, however I can only see this years items. (I think anyway) Is this untrue or am I glitched? How can I know for sure as well on the items?

You have to be an "old" zombie in order to see the older items so if you have a 2012 virus you only will see the 2012 items as well.

They actually have different years in different sections. I'm a 2011 zombie, so there's a section that says '2011 items', and a section above that for 2012 items. Like Edge said, you can only see the items of your current strain and up, it doesn't matter what you were in the past. Since you're a 2012 zombie, you can only see 2012 items. If you had stayed a 2009 zombie, you'd be able to see everything, but you cured, so you can't.
