Video of Crash

That's beyond sad... makes me wonder the cause.

In all honesty this reminds me a bit of the Eschede train disaster albeit a bit less ... graphic? Still makes me wonder though. It takes a lot to derail a train.

[edit] This very well may overtake it in worst high speed train crash in history.... makes me wonder about the cause. In the Eschede disaster it was due to metal fatigue and poorly designed/maintained wheels, but to my knowledge the design was changed shortly afterwards. Needless to say I'll be interested in their findings...

Stuff like this always makes me paranoid to take public transit, because I am not in control.

I read earlier that it was doing 100+ (118 I think) around a curve that was designed for them to do only 45. Just awful.

Here it is

El Pais cited sources close to the investigation saying the driver stated immediately after the crash that he had been traveling at 118 mph on the curve, which had a speed limit of 49 mph.

I've been following the news reports on this crash from Finnish news sites and according to them 80 people died and 130 people were injured (95 of the injured were still in hospital care yesterday). The train was reported driving to a 80 km/h curve at 190 km/h, derailing the train. There's a security camera video of the beginning of the crash (the camera gets destroyed by the crashing train I think). If the reason of the crash was careless speeding as some speculate, the driver should imo face charges for manslaughter. Until the black box has been consulted, however, it's too early to say who's to blame.

I heard from it on Tuesday evening, while I was on a camp... and I felt terrified! D: A train accident in Galicia during the pilgrim celebrations in Santiago de Compostela. Now all Spain is having 5 days of national mourning for this tragedy... :(
