Could you elaborate on your suggestion? Because as far as I can tell, the SB already does a good job at not cutting words off and not splitting up and hyphenating words.
Yeah, clarification, please or I'll have to lock this because, well, it already does that.
Okay, if you go like ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, or something long without a space in there or something, then your box overflows causing a scrollbar to pop up at the bottom, and that line you typed to go out the box.
This happens everywhere, doesn't it?
But in normal conversation, words aren't that long, so it really shouldn't be necessary to somehow-or-another decide that if one string of letters is over, say, 30, to cut it off at every 10 or something to wrap it. I mean, if something is that long, it just yells spam to me, and thats rather pointless.... Of course, I can't think of any examples where something would need to be that long, and it not be spam... if some examples are suggested, then I apologize for calling it pointless spam to be that long ^_^;
but what if I wanted to talk about the volcanic ash currently spreading its way across my country and the potential for myself and my family to end up with a lung disease caused by inhaling said ash? That lung disease is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcaniosis and I'm pretty sure if I typed that in the SB I'd stretch it out without spamming!
If volcanic ash was spreading across your country and could possibly cause a terrible lung disease in you and your loved ones, then I'd think you'd have bigger problems on your hands and perhaps you shouldn't be online sharing the potential for said disease in the SB on Subeta. :P
That seriously made me LOL though. xDD
That really shouldn't be done, though, so there's no real need for a word wrap. There are a few cases in which a really long word that isn't spamming would cause that, like said, but that's quite rare.
As relevant to current events as that is, I still think that, in most realistic situations, that wouldn't be the case. (And beside that, I'd be more worried about finding cheesecloth than posting in the SB were I there.)
I suppose the suggestion's valid regardless, though it doesn't change the case that most instances of this are simply spam.
- congrats on knowing the longest word in medicine.
But no. Seriously?
Have you checked a non-US news site recently? A volcano in Iceland erupted and a huge chunk of western Europe is blanketed by the ash cloud. Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcaniosis is a valid concern for Icelandic people and a serious discussion for the rest of us Europeans.
Believe me staying indoors and online makes perfect sense.
although I fear that this could easy turn off topic - short answer - yes, I do.
back on topic, ok. So if someone puts in a large word.. does it actually break the shoutbox, or just make things awkward? And if it does actually break, perhaps some suggestions at how long things need tobe before it gets cut off, and at what point? Like... 30 letters gets cutoff at every 12?
$10 says that word will never come up in conversation in the Shout Box.
