Not 100% sure if this is in the right place or not...
I want to make a gargoyle, because I can't find one for sale under $20. (I'm going to use air-dry clay)
Thanks in advance ❤
Have you checked DeviantArt for useful tutorials yet? I am not sure whether you want to sculpture it properly or just create a little one made of that air-dry clay (like, keychains), but I consider some of these useful: sculpturing tutorial walkthrough Other than that, you can simply search for clay tutorial, I am sure you will find something useful!
I second the DA suggestion! DA has a ton of tutorials.
Are you going to post the final product? I always love seeing what people create out of clay! ❤️
You could try this person on youtube. He does sculptures! Click me! Or, depending on the gargoyle type, he does have this "tutorial" Here's the playlist link and here's a link to the first video. I wouldn't say they're for beginners really, but beginners can definitely do them.
Thank you for the help. :D
I have him made and he's drying still... I think it's cute for a first try. ^^' But what am I supposed to do after this step because it is air-dry clay and not polymer clay? It's supposed to look completely white when it's finished but I don't know if I have to do anything before painting.
[edit] Oh and if you wanted to see it now I can upload a picture.
I am not sure myself, but isn't there any explanation on the air-dry clay you bought? I think you can paint it once it's dry, but you should apply some kind of transparent glue or (dunno hairspray or something?) after you're done, so it looks a bit glossy and the paint stays safe even in case it should get wet.
All it says on the package is that it can be used with most art paints. Doesn't tell me anything else as far as that goes sadly.
I didn't find the package itself very helpful haha.
You're welcome. I only work with polymer clay and I've only seen videos of people using paperclay (I believe that's the air-dry clay you're using, right?) to make ball jointed dolls. It's probably safe to paint right after it's dry and then finish off with a glaze/sealer. But personally, since it's paper, I'd put some kind of sealer on it before I painted it to make sure it doesn't become too wet again while I'm painting. I'd like to see pictures when it's completely done too please! :3
Clay is fun to work with for sure <3 Nothing like getting your hands into your work! I've seen some good tutorials at like Hobby Lobby, or Michaels...any art crafts store would have a good one

I've worked with air dry clay before and used acrylics to paint it. You need to make sure it's completely dry before you paint, though. I've had some heavier pieces take daaaaaays for the clay to fully dry. I like sealing my stuff with Mod Podge sealer, it tends to help things hold up way better.
Do you have to prime it before you paint it?
I never have. I've done painting and things on things like MLP customs and things without primer, though. Probably should have if only to make it easier to get coats on. But none of my stuff has ever had a problem with not being primed aside from the painting being difficultish depending on the colour. And the white air dry clay didn't have that problem since white is a good base for anything, really.
The gargoyle is /still/ drying, so I did this one in the meantime. For having to paint with toothpicks, I think I did alright lol.
Oh my God! That is the cutest thing I've ever seen!
Thank you ❤ :D I'm thinking about making a tiny cane xD
I've always wanted to try making canes! If you do, I'd love to see what you make. :D
Well not that kind of cane; I don't think I could figure them out yet haha. I meant like a dancing cane type of thing like the
