Hey everyone!

I need some advice on how to make some extra money. I want to go to Starfury Convention's Midnight Convention at the Hilton Metropole Hotel Birmingham, the UK, for my 21st birthday this year. May consider jobs such as note taking, etc.

Event:

Midnight (Doctor Who) Convention Date: 14th-16th December 2012 Place: Hilton Metropole Hotel, Birmingham, UK

So far the costs are: (converted from GBP to USD)

Passport (no Card) - $135 Weekend Pass - $150 USD Queen Hilton Deluxe Room - $405 USD (3 nights) Food and Other Amenities - $160 USD

Total so far ==========> $850 USD

I am still working out the round trip airfare.

  1. How much does round trip airfare for students usually cost? (lowest)

  2. How long does the trip from Miami, FL to Birmingham, UK take?

  3. How much money (USD wise) should I allot if I want to stay up to four more days to visit Nottingham and/or London?

I can't help with most of your questions, but for the third one:

A train ticket from Birmingham to London could be around £20 to £50 ($32 - $80) return, depending on whether you travel off-peak or not. Slightly cheaper if you stay in London and leave from an airport there, but most of the price is the journey to London rather than back to Birmingham. Birmingham to Nottingham will be around £20 to £30 return ($32 - $48).

Then there's accommodation. A London Travel Lodge could be around £40 - 90+ per night ($64 to $144+), depending on which day you stay, and where. Hostel accommodation would be cheaper, if you prefer. So already you're looking at a minimum of approx. $300 dollars, excluding things like food and travel within the cities.

As for making money, you say you're a student, so I assume you're at a university... maybe find a way to offer services? Like personal tutoring in academic subjects, maybe proofreading and the like if there are a lot of International students there. I think it might be difficult getting the required funds though, if you don't have a 'proper job'. Unless you luck out and end up getting a lot of tutoring work or something, for example.

Also, some useful sites: Trains tickets >>> http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ & http://www.thetrainline.com/ Accom. >>> http://www.lastminute.com/ [no hostels] & http://www.laterooms.com/ [has hostels listed]

When I fly back and forth from Newark, NJ and Scotland it takes about.. 6 hours and a bit to get there and over 7 hours coming back to the US so.. I would imagine it's maybe a wee bit more from Florida. Unless you're transferring from FL to Newark or Boston.. but I imagine there's flights to and from Florida so..

London's pretty expensive so I would have a lot of money saved up for that. It's worth going, but it takes a toll on the bank account :( Even going to the Tower of London was ridiculously priced. heh.

I can't help with too much more :) Make sure you have your student card as some places offer discounts! Good luck, I'm sure it's all very exciting!
