So I had a blood vessel burst in my eye last night. I don't know why it burst I wasn't even aware of it until I saw myself in the mirror but it looks horrible. There's a red stain near the corner of my right eye that turns into a sharp line going towards the pupil. It freaked me out when I saw it because OMG THERE'S BLOOD IN MY EYE OMG AM I DYING? But then I remembered the same thing happened to my friend once when he sneezed to hard and he was fine. It didn't even hurt him but mine is kind of bothering me a little because it's swollen too. I must have done something to it in my sleep.

It still looks bad. Like one half of my eye is pink with a line of blood through it. Ugh and here I thought I was going out tonight and going to look pretty. Nope.

Have you seen a doctor yet? I don't know exactly how busted blood vessels in the eyes work, but that doesn't sound normal to me if it's swelling to the point where you notice it.

No but it's fading now and the swelling has totally gone down to were it's no longer irritating(there's still blood there though ew). This kind of thing happens sometimes and as far as I can see there would be nothing a doctor could do to it. I'd only go there if it would help me significantly, I really don't have the money to spend on visits were they're just going to tell me "take some Tylenol and get some rest".

- try putting a warm tea bag on your closed eye for five minutes. It might help ease any discomfort.

Hey, just be glad it will go away. I had a jealous classmate throw a chunk of gravel at my face when I wasn't looking, which hit me in the eye. I still have a reddish patch of blood vessels on the white of my eye after.. counting 7 years now.

Ugh, this happens to me all the time. Eye strain is a big factor, and as a video game obsessed computer science student...yeah. xD But there's nothing to worry about. It'll go away in a day or two. Just try to let it rest till then.

Looking to buy this!

I permanently lost the sight in my left eye after a blood vessel burst in the back of my eye. If you notice any sort of 'floaters' obscuring your field of vision, hazy zones or anything really that messes up your eyesight, get your ass to the eye doctor immediately! If I had when it first happened, I might still have some vision in that eye.

I was thinking that maybe there was some type of eye drops that can help a busted blood vessel in the eye. Do you have a local free clinic?

From the sounds of things you have a subconjunctival haemorrhage usually just caused by a tiny burst vessel in the eye itself. Stay away from painkillers/asprin/NSAIDS (anti-inflammatories) as they will encourage more bleeding into the eye. I would also advise against putting the warm teabag on your eye as it will encourage vasodilation of the blood vessels which can lead to more bleeding.

Just leave it alone and it will go away on its own. Do you remember coughing/straining/lifting anything really heavy/rubbing at your eyes or taking blood thinners? They can cause this to happen.

Otherwise it looks really freaky but is mostly non-harmful unless it starts hurting or affecting your vision.

Wow that sucks I'm sorry someone did that to you! D:

Thanks, I haven't lost any vision in that eye and if I had I would have gone to the doctor immediately. I need my eyes to work, as far as this thing goes it was just looking ugly and causing a little bit of irritation so I decided to leave it alone after remembering something similar happened to my friend and he was fine. I'm sorry about your eye. :(

No local free clinic but maybe I can find some eyedrops with medicine in them at a store. I'll look tomorrow. Thank you for the suggestion!

I don't take any medications but I do cough in my sleep quite a bit and since I woke up looking like this I'm guessing that's what happened. Thank you for the tips!

Probably. Coughing increases blood pressure and heart rate, so it could certainly lead to a ruptured vessel in the eye.

On a side note, do you have a cause as to your night time coughing? [/takesoffmedicalhat]

And my pleasure. :3

I don't know, it's something that happens to me. My mom also coughs in her sleep and my grandmother did too. I don't smoke like my mother does or my grandmother did, I always figured that's why they coughed but I seem to have developed it anyway.

Does your mother or grandmother have asthma or have you ever had it? Could be well worth mentioning it to your family physician as an aside when you're next in. Could be a very easy fix for that annoying cough of yours.

Nope. The only one in my family who has asthma is my uncle's wife so no one blood related has it or has ever had it. It's really weird, I thought for sure it was because they were smokers so I never picked up a cigarette(plus my grandfathered died of lung cancer and my paternal grandmother has had throat cancer) yet I got the cough anyway.
