Hi all! Working on a story right now that I hope to go with for a looooong while, and I wanted to ask everyone's opinion on the main characters' names.

A little back story as far as the names go; none of the characters have last names or even middle names. Their first name is their identity and as a result must have significance (either in meaning or in the sound of the name). For a brief description of my two main characters, here goes: the female protagonist is a very strong, determined teenager. She's physically quite small and it doesn't match her personality in the slightest. She's a born leader and doesn't take crap from anyone. I'm pretty set on the name Braith (previously Liv, but I fell out of love with it). Everyone I've talked to about the name has never heard of it, and it's never even been used five times in a year (that's right, this name addict does some weird research ;)).

The male protagonist is similar; determined, strong, very capable, though he is more obviously gentle than Braith. He arrives where the story takes place to help their community, and ends up changing how the unhappy place works. I've picked Zephyr, meaning "west wind", for the dorky reason that I like to think of Zeph as a wave (or gust, if you will) of change into the place.

The other name I wanted to ask you about is Audric, the wise but still quite young leader of the community. He's not very significant (as he disappears from the story in not too much time), but he's very important to the characters.

Okay! Done rambling. Let me know.

First of all, you gif caught my attention, and I love it! Is he Buster Posey?

The names, for me, are alright. They are different and unique, as the characters are. Personaly, they fit perfectly. Good luck writing!

Alright, I have two things to say here and will preface them by saying that we don't know who names them or how old they are when they are named so it's kind of hard to say if they fit into your story.

So here are my two opinions:

  1. They name themselves. In this case if the character likes it and you have that feeling they do, then go for it. :)
  2. If the communities/elder/parents/leader/someone else names them, then it should have to do with some personality trait. In that case, I'm not sure Zephyr fits. I love the name, but you'd have to change your description of it from something you love as a writer and make sure it has actual story meaning. I don't see someone naming Zeph or Zeph naming himself based on how he compares to another person (change of pace).
  3. If they were just born with their name and there wasn't any magic future-seeing, it doesn't matter what their name is.

Either way readers will accept whatever's on the page. ^_^ If names are important that I'd hope that your writing echoes their meaning. It's more important that you show them behaving as they've been named if it describes their identity.

Weirdly enough, I used to roleplay Pern stuff a lot and the female's name is one of my old Dragons! I'm partial to that name, so I can't say much against it.

Good luck!

I'm not a huge fan of baseball, as I just started to watch last year, but watched the finals... I think I have a team!

Good luck writing again!

Hm. Interesting. I do like the names, even if Zephyr is more common for girls. However, one thing you should be aware of: If Zephyr and Braith are the only out-there names in the story, it makes it less believable. It causes the impression like the author (you) is trying to make the main characters perfect, or "Mary Sues". So make sure you throw in some other strange names for characters who aren't protagonists, otherwise you'll get some skeptical or irritated readers.

First off, on a somewhat name related note...your topic caught my attention as Emily Elizabeth is my first and middle name (I also love writting, so why not help a fellow writter). I though this coinsidence was too good to pass up.

Now, for the names. The name "Braith" seems to be a fantastic choice for your female charater. "Braith" as I pronounce it, sounds like "brave," which I assume she is. The name has a Earthy-stong somewhat masculine tone. I have a similar charater (also small in stature) who is a daring leader, some what brash, tomboy who is as tough as nails, and takes no one's crap. I named her Devon, which also gives the same hearty "masculine, but still feminine" connoation. I really like the name choice, though I haven't researched its meaning.

As for Zephyr, I also like the name as it scientifically, or rather meterologically means a strong gale-force wind. Zephyr matches his personality like a glove. Winds can be strong and somewhat dangerous, like him, as well as gentle and renewing, also like him. Zeph, as a nickname, sounds easygoing and very affectionate. I'm sure whoever calls him that, is near and dear to him.

I hope to someday read this story! I am intrigued by the premise/backstory so far. Best of luck writting! :)
