Hey, I'm looking for unusual but pretty girls names. I had a short list of names I liked, but hubby didn't like any of them. Spent a lot of time looking through thousands of names, but I don't see anything that I really like. We want to avoid really popular names like Mikayla, Mackenzie, Kayla etc...

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

Hi, I saw your post here a couple of hours ago but I was too tired to sit any longer so I had to wait. And I see that no one has posted since you started your topic, but perhaps if you tell people the names that you and your hubby have already decided against that might help.

I'm 59 and never had any children (congratulations by the way) but I always wanted to...life simply didn't turn out for me the way I had hoped.

Unfortunately, I looked up all the names I was thinking of on a "top 100 names" list and I was surprised that they were ALL on it. I'm "out of the loop" with the world, so I'm clueless. I was thinking of Gabrielle, Peyton, Madison, and they were all on there. I actually like the name Brielle better than Gabrielle and I don't think that it's too popular.

Well, as you can see I'm no help at all. I can't think of anything but I thought if I posted it might help to "get the ball rolling," so to speak.

I think it's great that you want to give your baby girl a pretty name that's unusual and if you wouldn't mind a bit of advice (I'm not assuming that you don't know this already, but just in case) I've heard that names which are TOO unusual are difficult for children to deal with. Sometimes people can't pronounce them, etc. And you've probably thought of that since you posted this here and I see that you're earnestly looking for help.

The reason that I wanted to respond, besides what I've said, is that my parents gave me a name I didn't like. It was fine for a child but it wasn't a name to grow old with. So when I was 35 I legally changed my entire name. Wouldn't it be great if we could simply let the infant choose her own name, right? But that would never work. I guess if a child knows that you're not going to be upset if they end up not liking their name that helps.

So the problem was that it was Wendy, it's not formal, it's a nickname. I looked in baby books all of my young life searching and discovered that Wendy comes from the Welsh name: Gwendolyn, but I changed the spelling to Gwendelynn, and my middle name WAS Lynn so my folks weren't far off. And the reason I changed my last name is that it was always mispronounced. It was Piester (the first syllable rhymes with Peace, not pie) so now it's Gwendelynn R. Peace.

Unfortunately I did NOT anticipate that ppl would want to call me Gwen. I don't like one syllable names, I think they're too abrupt. So, in choosing a baby name there's always the consideration of how people are going to try to shorten it. I'm fierce about my name, so I will correct a person over and over if I have to. Usually once I tell them the story of how I got my name they "comply" lol!!

Also I happen to love the name Rachael which is my niece's name, but when she was young people were always calling her Rache (like rake but with a ch sound) and I didn't really like that, but I never called her that. And with Gabrielle it becomes Gabby, which ???. So, even though I'm not good at thinking of a good name, I hope that just the thoughts that I shared with you are helpful and hope you don't take offense at my advice because I'm truly trying to be kind.

So, I'm going to just think about it, because if I had ever had a baby girl I wanted to give her a beautiful name. I always liked the name Mercedes and I think it has a LOT of dignity and beauty, so that was the name I was going to name my child if I'd ever had one. I was SURE I was going to have a baby girl some day. I was actually getting a massage once and this woman who was massaging me was psychic, but I didn't know that until she started telling me things.

She said that I would have a daughter and that I should name her Mehrcy. She actually TOLD me to spell it that way though it is pronounced Mercy. I was astonished because I had picked out the name Mercedes (with the possible nickname of Mercy) years before. I had a friend at that time who told me that her name was supposed to be Soliel, so I was going to name her Mercedes Soliel Peace and that sounded good to me.

It might help if you mentioned on your thread what your last name is because a name is all about the entire name, right? I think it needs to flow.

Once again you have my biggest congratulations and wishes for a very healthy baby!!! :) So when is she due?

PS: One last thought: Are you interested in ethnic names because I noticed your user name sounds Irish or Celtic and it's very pretty...and I hope this isn't too choppy, it was too longer :P I had to cut a bunch out.

Congratulations!

Since I'm from Portugal, I have no idea how common are these "english" names, but here's a few I find pretty: Violet, Alegra, Grace, Anita, Amelia, Juliet (it'd be Julieta for me) and Amanda. Whenever I have a girl, I'm planing on naming her Aurora. :)

Edit: Evangeline, Genevieve, Valentina, Vera, Naomi.

Hmm, looks like I wasn't getting the pings for this thread =/

We've looked at thousands of names, so I thought it would be better to just give ideas of what we wanted to stay away from instead of posting thousands of names!

Thanks for the congratulations =)

Considering the difficulty of names is a problem. We had to change our surname from Guyonneau to Guy because of the difficulties people had spelling it. The only problem is getting a name to flow with that has been really difficult. A lot of names we've decided against because they just didn't sound right with the surname.

She is due 29 September, so we've got just over 8 weeks left to come up with something!

I would consider any names at this point. This is going to be our last child now, so it kinda feels like it's really important to get it just right.

Thanks! Those are pretty names. I will be adding them to my list to consider =)

Thank you! Nice pretty girly sounding names. At least I have some more names to consider.

Well I wish you the best of luck in finding that very special name. I see your point about fitting with a short surname. It's really too bad that you had to shorten it. I know how it is to have a name that nobody can spell or pronounce, I think I spoke of that in my other post. No one ever mispronounces my surname since I changed it to Peace. That's an easy one.

I thought it had been forever since you posted back & was feeling badly that I hadn't responded, but I see it was only a week ago. It's funny, when I first read your topic and post I assumed that this was your first baby, for some reason, I don't know why. But you've said she's going to be your last, so how many children do you have? It must feel good to know that your family is (almost) complete, and again I wish you all the best!!
