How can you tell how many sP you have?

Other than depositing into the vault in increasing small increments. I'm a confused newbie, so I'm sorry if this has an obvious answer.
On your dashboard (the area to the left where your events show up) there should be a section called Subeta: your user name.
Your on hand sPs should be listed there. If you don't have that box listed on your dashboard, you can add it on Customize sidebar on the personal menu. (its called Your Account, in the add section)

No problem :). I usually set my dash to "smart" that way I have all my info showing, except when I get events.

Or in the top menu Personal > Customize Sidebar I use the Dashboard only. The smart is kinda annoying, you have to delete your events or you'll only see your info if you change the display
