So I got 2 packages of lettuce seeds. Iceberg and oakleaf.I know they can be grown indoors but im not sure what kind or size container to use..I know I need to set them in the sunlight and away from vents.(so no hot air blows on them or dries them out)I also know I can use artificial light if its storming and seeds can't soak sun.So any tips or advice?
I cant grow them in my yard cause neighbors don't keep there dogs home and they dig holes everywhere..A fence is out of my budget..So indoors is what Im doing.
I plan on setting them outside on porch on good weather days.So they can be in the sun but I have to watch where I put them cause of stray animals and ones that don't stay home..
Ive never grown or planted anything myself before..Me and my mom would plant a rose when a family member passed away.My mom bought and did all the stuff..I just watered them or/and filled hole in.I was young..I still water them and cut dead branches.. Other than that ive had no experience with planting or caring for things.
Ive heard I can use a egg carton to start the seeds in and when they start growing I can transfer them into a bigger container..

An egg carton is a good idea, and as long as it's made of a biodegradable material (like the brown cardboard ones), you can cut the cups apart and place them right in the soil in your larger containers. If the egg carton is styrofoam or something that you're not sure is biodegradable, you'll want to carefully take the ball of soil out to place it in a larger container. I've not heard of oakleaf lettuce, but iceberg is fairly easy to grow. I've done it in a planter box before (the kind one would put under a window), something that's around 8 inches wide and 3 feet long or so for three plants. It was a little tight, but it worked out alright. You could also put maybe three plants in a 24 inch round pot. Lettuce doesn't have a very long/deep root system, so the soil doesn't have to be very deep. I'd say 6-8 inches deep would be plenty. Plastic is better than clay/terra cotta as they will dry the soil out and plastic will not. Having drainage holes on the bottom of the pot is important - place pots with drainage holes in plastic trays so the water can drain out without ruining the floor/table. Standard potting soil is fine (I like the kind with peat moss in). As far as artificial light goes, you'll want to make sure the light is far enough away from the plant so it doesn't dry out the leaves (always keep the light 4-6 inches above the top of the highest seedling/plant). A temperature of 60-70 degrees fahrenheit is perfect to grow lettuce and the plants need 14-16 hours of good sunlight a day so that their leaves fully develop. You can use a light fertilizer if you like, or if things don't look like they're growing very well in the soil you have - fertilize once a week for the seedlings' first three weeks. That's about all I can think of offhand. If you come up with any questions, feel free to ask me!
wow!Ok that's a lot on info thanks!
I got my seeds today and going to get potting soil in 2-4 weeks.I got sent Lime Aromatic basil..Which ive never heard of..Sadlly none of my 3 packets of seeds have instructions..I was also wondering can cucumbers be grown indoors is there a planting season for them or are they for anytime?
Im trying to save money buy growing my own stuff. It will also cut down on trips to the store which saves me even more money.Gas prices are crazy..
