This is a medieval fantasy roleplay set in the Forgotten Realms Dungeons and Dragons setting, during the Spellplague (an event between the third and fourth editions of D&D). Although it is based on this setting, no experience with D&D should be necessary; I'll try to explain everything relevant here, and if something's vague or confusing, let me know.
Plot
The goddess of magic is dead! Mystra has been assassinated by the god Cyric, tearing apart the fabric of the world's magic and throwing the world into a chaos called the Spellplague. Magic is now unreliable, with many spells creating unexpected effects, and some wizards losing their abilities altogether. Those people may be the lucky ones. Some magic users and other people exposed to the effects of the plague have been scarred by it, changing their appearance and causing random effects on their victims. Some of these are special abilities, but they come with negative effects and many of the spellscarred have died. Others, known as the plaguechanged, have transformed into terrible creatures. Some magic items have been destroyed, and travel portals often fail or connect to the wrong destination. Meanwhile, whole nations have moved to other dimensions or sunken under the sea, and political chaos has spread across the realms. Planes of existence have become closer together, giving demons, shadow creatures and fey creatures more access to the main world.
One region heavily affected by these events is Cormyr. The Forest Nation's military used to rely on it's elite War Wizards, but their numbers have fallen sharply. A third of the War Wizards have either died, been plaguechanged, or left after losing their powers, and their leader, the Royal Wizard Caladnei, has fallen ill as a result of her own spellscar. The remaining War Wizards are working with the Purple Dragon Knights to protect the kingdom from threats both magical and political and to research the new nature of magic, but an air of uncertainty hangs over the formerly strong order.
Setting
This roleplay is set in a War Wizard base in Suzail, the capital of Cormyr. This particular garrison is the location of the War Wizard's Academy and the location of the order's magical research in addition to a number of regular War Wizards. It is home to the War Wizards and their families, academy students (who study as Battle Mages for five years before graduating and joining the war wizards), visiting researchers, and a few members of the Purple Dragon Knights, Cormyr's non-magical military. Some of the War Wizards who have lost their powers are training with them. Hippogriffs and horses are used for transportation. The year is 1385 DR.
Characters
Original characters only. You can't be Caladnei or, say, Elminster.
Name:
Gender:
Age: (Keep in mind that a Battle Mage at the academy must be mentored by a full-fledged War Wizard in good standing and other kids living in the base would be children of War Wizards. If you can't find someone to play the mentor or parent of your child or teen character, you must either double as them yourself or pick another character to play.)
Race: (Cormyr is populated by mostly humans and some elves, halflings and half-elves. You can play another choice if your backstory explains it.)
Role: (War Wizard, family member, Dragon Knight, student, etc.)
Orientation:
Appearance: (The uniform of the War Wizards is a purple cloak with a white shirt and pants, a utility belt and purple boots. Academy students wear the same without the cloak and Purple Dragon Knights wear a white tabard with the Purple Dragon emblem on the front over their armor and have the badge of their order.)
History:

Spells (if a wizard): (You can come up with your own spells or use choices from any edition of D&D. Keep in mind that more powerful magic users are more vulnerable to spellplague effects. Here's a list of 3.5 spells if you don't play D&D: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spellLists/sorcererWizardSpells.htm )
Other Skills: (War Wizards may be trained with staves, spears or other simple weapons, Purple Dragon Knights know more weapons and anyone can have non-fighting-related skills)
Spellplague: (Has your character been spellscarred, lost their magic, etc.?)

Name: Garran Redwater Gender: Male Age: 26 Race: Human Role: War Wizard Orientation: Straight
Appearance: He is a tall man with short, straight brown hair, white over his spellscar, and green eyes. When acting as a War Wizard he wears his uniform, obviously, but even when he's not, he dresses sharply and professionally. His spellscar is blue and runs across the top of his head, down his forehead and across one eye in a straight line. He has a number of other, more mundane scars from various battles, and generally has a serious expression. His only jewelery is his wedding ring.
History: Garran comes from a middle class merchant family from Suzail. He had a fairly uneventful childhood, until he was ten, when his country entered the Goblin Wars. His family lost most of their wealth in an orc raid and were forced to move to the far west by the docks and give up many of the luxuries they were used to. When he was thirteen, the country was still recovering and, inspired by tales of his grandfather's heroics as an adventuring War Wizard, he went to the academy. Despite his lack of experience with magic, he was accepted because of the many threats to Cormyr following the war. His mentor was one of the students his grandfather mentored and they became and still are very close. He met his wife at the academy and they married soon after they graduated and had a son four years later. They fought together in The Four Days War and many smaller conflicts with orcs and goblins. When the spellplague hit it gave him a spellscar affecting his brain, and gave her one that stopped her heart.
Personality: A serious and patriotic young man, he tends to have a no-nonsense attitude, but it's combined with a good heart and a heroic spirit. He gets focused on rules and regulations and can sometimes be inflexible and bossy, but he's good at protecting the people he cares about. He has no idea what he's doing as a single father, but he's working on it, and he loves Toby more than anything.
Spells (if a wizard): Prestidigitation, read magic, detect magic, ray of frost, light, flare, dancing lights. Other Skills: He is a good leader, and trained to fight with a staff.
Spellplague: He used to be a powerful evoker, but he now has a spellscar that activates when he tries to do magic more powerful than the spells listed above. It knocks him out for several minutes and leaves him pretty incapacitated and blind in the eye the scar runs over for about a day afterwards. Sometimes the spell does work, but the results are not worth it. Worryingly, he's also had it activate without him using magic, giving him seizures.
Other: He has a son, four-year-old Tobianth Redwater. I'm also willing to have him have other children and mentor academy students if I like your character and it makes sense. (He's 26, he doesn't have a seventeen year old daughter. I would have made him older but I wanted the Goblin Wars as part of his backstory.)
Name: Tobianth "Toby" Redwater Gender: Male Age: 4 Race: Human Role: Child Orientation: Straight
Appearance: He takes after his mother and looks almost nothing like Garran. He has very light blonde hair and blue-gray eyes, and freckles across his cheeks. He's small for his age, and still young enough that his parents pick out his clothes.
History: Both of his parents being War Wizards, Toby has lived in the Suzail base for most of his life (they spent six months in Marsember when he was too young to remember). His mother used to take him into Suzail proper to go to the parks and shops, but his young life has recently changed drastically. He hasn't been allowed to set foot outside of the base since the beginning of the Spellplague, and he doesn't understand where his mother is.
Personality: He tends to be sweet and energetic, but gets shy around people he doesn't know. He's very naturally curious and loves to explore, but his father barely lets him leave his side nowadays.
Spells (if a wizard): N/A Other Skills: He's still little and doesn't have any adult-level skills yet.
Spellplague: No direct effects (he's not spellscarred, etc.), but it did take his mother and change his life.
Other: His father is War Wizard Garran Redwater.
OOC: That's a lot of reading. Alright. Could you possibly explain this all like I'm a five year old? I'm sorry I'm not too clear on the whole... everything.
OOC: I like how you mostly made the RP based off of D&D 3.5e instead of 4.0 :).
Name: (Qanescir vivex tibur) Revon
Gender: Male Age: 143 (Young adult, for a dragonborn) Race: Dragonborn (3.5e dragonborn, formerly human) Role: Dragon Knight, Mentor for young battle/war wizards in training Orientation: Asexual
Appearance: Revon: Revon is about 6' 3" tall, and has emerald green eyes. He wears the usual tabard over his full-plate metal armor, which is made from brown and red tinted steel, which gives off the impression of bronze and copper scales. He also carries a b.astard sword, nearly 3/4ths of his height, yet he can still wield it as a one-handed sword. Kayelin: Kayelin is Revon's dragon companion. She looks just about like any other adult dragon. She has light-ish bronze scales with a hint of yellow, has a wingspan of several feet, and her horns and claws are short yet sharp. She also is equipped with steel breastplate armor (Which comes with greaves and bracers)
History: Born into a wealthy family of Purple dragon knights, he was to eventually be one. During one of his training days their home was burned to the ground by a red dragon, killing his mother, father, and siblings. It was that time he was called by Bahamut for the rite of rebirth. With his inherited money he had set out for the rite of rebirth. After becoming a Dragonborn, he had started to train to become one of Bahamut's Dragon Knights, hatching a bronze dragon, whose egg had been abandoned in the cave his rite of rebirth took place in, though it had not been there before he started. Eventually, through his travels, he had heard of an order of Dragon Knights, and he mistakenly joined the order of the Purple Dragon Knights. Though he knew this, he still stayed within the order, but still longed for his crusade against the spawn of Tiamat. Personality: Revon is a calm, collected warrior, able to lead people either into battle, or down the right path. Though he has a calm demeanor he can be very sarcastic or very serious. Though he can be very strict, he has a very just soul, only punishing people only when necessary, and as necessary.
Spells (if a wizard): N/A Other Skills: Training with b.astard sword, Draconic Aspect: Mind, Dragon Mount, Dragon Empathy, Rallying Attack, Rallying Cry
Spellplague: Kayelin has been spellscarred so that she cannot use magic like other dragons can. Other: Revon is multi-classing with a Purple Dragon Knight

OOC: Thanks. It wasn't intentional; the Spellplague is just chronologically closer to 3.5 than 4e.
IC: "Come on, now, Toby. We're going to be late!" Garran called down the sidewalk to a little boy dragging his feet.
"Don't want to go to a dumb meeting," Toby replied, crossing his arms and pouting. If you didn't know Garran and Toby, you wouldn't assume they were related. Garran was a tall, dark-haired man dressed sharply in the uniform of a War Wizard. His son, on the other hand was small, towheaded four-year old in a dark red, hooded tunic. Of course, that was moot as almost everyone did know them, given that the base only had about a hundred War Wizards at the best of times and now maybe sixty or seventy.
An exasperated Garran rubbed at his forehead, over a scar that ran from the top of his head down to his left eye. The line was a telltale blue that marked Garran as one of the spellscarred. "If you cooperate, I'll get you... some sort of pastry," he promised.
Toby's blue-gray eyes brightened at that. "From Belaeron's?" he asked hopefully.
"No, I'll ask Carlir at the dining hall."
"Daddy, how come we don't go to the city anymore?" Toby whined.
"Because there are monsters out there," Garran reminded his son with all the patience he could muster. And I can't protect you anymore, he wanted to add, but stayed silent. No need to make that Toby's problem. "Now come on."
The pair continued down the street, Toby still lagging behind.
Revon stretched as he woke up, his eyes refusing to open. After a few minutes the slowly opened and blinked a few times. "Ah, the meeting's today." He told himself. He slowly began to get into a sitting position, legs seemingly falling over the edge of his bed frame as he sat up. He scratched the back of his head and rubbed his scaled leg. He stood up, stretched once more, and began to put on his armor over his linen clothes. He picked up his b.astard sword and sheathed it in the scabbard on his back. Revon sighed in relief, feeling the familiar weight of his sword on his back. He opened and closed his gauntleted hand several times, to check for any rust. There was none to be heard or seen. He then grabbed a cup of ale, chugged it down, took a small loaf of bread, and left out the door.
"Going to the meeting?" Kayelin said in Revon's mind. The locals had slowly, yet eventually gotten used to a dragon living atop one of the houses.
"Indeed I am." Revon told Kayelin, not needing to look in her direction, "When it's done I've been assigned to mentor one of the new students how to use staves and maybe a spear. After that you and I might go hunting."
Kayelin closed her eyes, resting her head on her paws, "Sounds alright to me."
With that, Revon headed off to the meeting

Garran managed to get to the meeting only fifteen minutes late, rushing through the big double doors of the meeting hall with his annoyed preschooler in tow. He apologized profusely to the assembled War Wizards and Purple Dragon Knights, sent Toby to a chair in the back with some toys, and took his seat around the large table. "As we all know, recent events have significantly weakened Cormyr's defenses, while putting the kingdom in more danger than ever. Every magic user in the room knows that no spell can be trusted, and the environmental effects of the plague have been catastrophic. Many mages have been affected physically as well, including our own Royal Wizard, Caladnei. Meanwhile our numbers have dropped by a full third. Rumors of deicide will be left to the clergy of Mystra. We, meanwhile, must focus on developing a plan for dealing with the effects of the plague."
Toby sat in his little chair and made his wooden toy soldier fight a red dragon, but soon grew bored of waiting and started to wander in circles around the table, observing in fascination the Purple Dragon Knights with their armor and shiny weapons. He knew he was forbidden to touch anything, but he considered that maybe his daddy wouldn't notice if he just took a closer look at one of these swords...
(I know the time is a bit jumbled, but Revon arrived just before the meeting started)
Revon arrived at the meeting just in time, a literal minute before the meeting had started. He sat down in the slightly cushioned seats the War Wizards provided the 'guests' and themselves. As all the other knights and wizards settled in, he noticed a chair was empty. It was a rare occasion for any of the seats at the meeting to be empty, but he simply brushed off the worry. A mage towards the head of the table began speaking about the plague across Cormyr after a while speaking about who-knows-what. Revon never pays attention to the meetings anyways, rarely ever speaking, unless directly addressed. His mind began to wander, the urge of battle against Tiamat's spawn calling to him, as if the Platinum Dragon himself was calling.
Just then a War Wizard and a child bursted through the door, apologizing several times, until taking the previously empty seat. Not long after, the child which seemed to be the late wizard's son, got up from his chair in the back corner, obviously bored. Revon saw the boy start to circle the table, not paying much attention to the mages, but more to the Dragon Knights. He saw the boy approach, eyes seemingly gleaming. Revon turned his head towards the other War Wizards and Purple Dragon Knights, as to not draw attention from the others.
