You can make sP to buy yourself items instead of asking by doing quests - I would start out with Wizard Quests - they give out tokens that you can sell to make more.
Asking people to give you things isn't warranted (or allowed. is right). Asking for help is another thing: plenty of people are happy to help you out and help you find ways to make sP if you ask. :)
