I'm brand new trying to get my first pet, but whenever I go to adopt it it says 'Oh no! Someone already owns so-and-so, sorry!' or something close to that. Am I doing something wrong?

I also run a naming thread Here Many names are taken in this land by now so one way to know is by these three threads or going subeta.net/pets/name you might want here and see if it says no such pet, inactive account or a pet owned already to determine what you use. Also the pound can be a good name source to adopt as is making apps for people who might have a pet UFA

I ran into similar problems, and I guess we can't adopt pets until our accounts are two weeks old.

From the pound no, creating yes. You can make as many pets as you can think of until your slots are full, so long as the name(s) you want are open for use. Also bear in mind you can't pound a pet until your account is one month old.

lol no worries it's not an overly popular thread so it gets lost until I post on it or someone else does.
