I recently interviewed for a part time position at a library, and was offered the job yesterday. Orientation starts July 9th. The job will be 16 hours a week, doing book shelving and cleaning and stuff like that.
However, I've had some travel plans scheduled for the first ~week and a half to 2 weeks of August, and I forgot to ask about it when I was offered the job D: So, I'm really stressing out about how to ask about it. I don't want to make a bad impression by asking for time off right when starting the job, especially since I didn't mention it in the job offer. My trip is not rigidly necessary, I haven't paid for any tickets or anything like that, but I was planning on driving to Kansas from Georgia to have an extra car to move my boyfriend's stuff down here, as well as taking a road trip to California.
I'm not sure if I should call back the person who told me I had been chosen for a job, especially since I'm not really sure if she would even be the one to handle these sort of things, or wait until orientation and ask there. Any advice?
In your position, I'd wait until starting the job before discussing holiday. Because as you say, it's not like tickets need to be booked and not 100% essential. It sounds like because it's part-time and not a specialist position, they're likely to give you the time off. Maybe! I actually had to do something similar, but it was just a day off I needed. I waited until the job started and it was no problem.
If you start causing 'problems' for them before you've even been started, there's always the chance they've got other candidates that were also suitable... ;(

Thanks for the advice! What you're saying makes sense, especially since I haven't filled out any paperwork or anything, I'm sure they could drop me pretty easily. I'm hoping that it won't be too much of an issue since, like you said, it's not a specialist position.
