I have accumulated a lot of food that I am not using (I keep my pets in the resort...) and isn't worth much sp. Will donating it (or other items, for that matter) do anything for me right now? It looks like there used to be an achievement tally for fireside a while back on donating food, but that has ended. Is there a similar or other situation for general donation, or does it just get removed from my inventory with a nice feeling attached? :)

There was also the vesnali event of donating the food to charity... I'd say just try and see if it gets you any achievement at all? worst case you can't donate it to her and just throw it out for other people and feel good for hellping

You get a few nice items from donating a total of 250 items, the achievement is under 'Items' the last point. :)

anything that's just a few sP can possible be Recycled or Fragmentized.

You could ask via Ticket if the Achievement is working. A lot of them are wonky right now, so it's worth checking in, IMO.

Keeping your pet amused and fed at the Lakeside Inn is inexpensive, less than you could get from one play of Random, so there's really no such thing as a user who can't afford to feed their pets.

I'm pretty sure you still have the chance of receiving the Fireside items she was handing out. I'm not positive but the last time I donated I got them.
