Apart from the obvious - when they get hit in battle, is there any other reason a pet might lose health - like maybe if it's hungry for some time? I've only battled with one pet so far but the others seem to lose health occasionally too.

Battle is the main way pets can lose health. However, during Fireside, giving the Red Rreign any burnable item with "wreathed" in its name will anger him and one of the outcomes that can happen is him reducing your pet's HP down to 0.

Yeah, but how about pets just being hungry? I'm pretty sure all but one of my pets have never battled and had nothing to do with the event...

If your health gets increased through an RE, it might look like it's gone down a little bit since the amount they actually have doesn't change, only the full amount. If that makes sense.
Pets get hungry naturally. Actually, now that I think of it, a side effect of using Malerias clawed glove in battle is that it can make pets you are not battling with unhappy, hungry, and/or at 0 HP.
Like said, when your pet's max health is increased by any means (whether it'd be training, boosters, scratchcards, EXP, random events, or whatever), their current HP remains unchanged.

Ah, it's probably the training then, I hadn't noticed.

other virtual pet sites might have spontaneous or free healing when your pet increases in Health stat, but Subeta does not.
I didn't notice it for the longest time, because I battle with all my pets, was using a healing scroll in battle, and budgeted sP for going to the Healer regularly.
On that note, is there a situation outside of battle when healing costs more than sP per HP? Seems a bit too easy...

Healing Potions are usually more expensive, if you want to spend more? There might also be an item that Shinwa drops for her quests that will be more costly, dunno if they changed that one.
If you are just figuring out a new challenger in the battle coliseum, the healing costs add up as it trounces you many many times. Also, there are special events in which everyone takes on a very strong challenger that is stronger than any pet. If you want to score hits against such a challenger, the healing costs will rack up.
