i went to the library quickly today to see if they had lolita in, but they didn't. somebody had just taken it out, and so theres a 2 week+ wait (depending if the person renews the book) and i really want to read something! so i'm going back there tomorrow and i was hoping that any of you guys could suggest me a good book? :)

not a massive fan of young adult novels. hated the fault in our stars. my favourite books are a clockwork orange, the catcher in the rye, invisible monsters and 1984 if that helps at all?

thank you! :D

I thought The Fault In Our Stars was terrible too. Based on your favorites I'd highly recommend White Oleander by Janet Fitch. It's one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read. Fight Club is good if you enjoy Palahniuk.

It's Little Edie from the Grey Gardens documentary. She was a formerly wealthy socialite who became a reclusive cat lady with her mother in their mansion in The Hamptons. It's free on YouTube if you're interested. The movie based on the documentary with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore was good too.

You might like Kurt Vonnegut. I'd recommend Mother Night and his classic Slaughterhouse-Five. What's Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges. Similar to Catcher in the Rye in that they're both coming-of-age stories; kind of humorous. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey (Because you liked Clockwork Orange) Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood (Because you liked 1984; dystopian) Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (Because you liked 1984; dystopian)

I've read the books you've listed, with the exception of Invisible Monsters, although I read Fight Club and Survivor by Palahnuik. If you've already seen the movie Fight Club, I'd suggest passing on the book and reading Survivor instead (:! Hopefully you find something you like

I love the movie too ^^! I'd say the book and movie are equals. I'll check out Invisible Monsters.. I was going to read it a while back when I found out a Panic at the Disco song was inspired by the book but I never got around to it xD

@ Tsar OK I kinda doubt my reading taste is similar to yours based on the books you read but I thought I'd recommend some of my faves anyway: Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy It's a western but soooo good and depressing, it's one of my fave reads of all time. You might have heard of The Road, either the movie or book--it's by the same author. Blood Meridian has a similar vibe to The Road, though IMO 'Blood' is much better and even a little darker.

Perfume by Patrick Süskind I didn't think I was going to like this book as much as I did, but it's actually really brilliant. I mean, it's about the power of SCENT of all things, but maybe that's why I thought it was so unique. It's kind of a mystery/serial killer book with a lot of dark, creepy content contrasted by a lot of ridiculousness.

I'd also recommend Pale Fire by Nabokov. I personally liked it better than Lolita (which was also good!) although it's a bit tough to figure out. And all of Salinger's other works if you haven't already read them, he's definitely my favorite!!

❤️❤️❤️

This is a shot in the dark, but possibly Memoirs of A Geisha by Arthur Golden? The movie by the same title was named after it and closely follows the storyline. Basically a fisherman's daughter by the name of Chiyo is sold to a Geisha house along with her sister so their father could pay for a doctor to try to heal her mother. Little Chiyo wants nothing but to go home however and tries to find her sister, Satsu and go back home. Well, she fails in her attempt and has to serve Mother (that is who they call the owner of the Geisha house she's staying at) as her slave to pay off a big list of debts she accumulated. The book goes on to tell how she finds herself her destiny. It is basically around the 1930s with World War II.

If that is not to your liking, my friend Raifreak is reading House of Leaves. She said it is really freaky and essentially it is a thriller/horror about a man who finds this manuscript about a man who lived at this house and while he's reading about it, he becomes paranoid because the house is apparently haunted or something. Apparently reading the manuscript makes one go mad. If you like thrillers, House of Leaves is the one to read.

I loved 1984 also! Brave New World is a pretty similar dystopian, but not as good as 1984 in my opinion.

Literature: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Silas Marner Night (by Elie Wiesel) Hiroshima (by John Hersey) Lord of the Flies All Quiet on the Western Front

Contemporary: Sarah's Key The Ring (yes, the original Japanese novel that inspired the horror film; it is very good) Go Ask Alice Anything by Stephen King lol honestly the guy is a pro; he knows what he's doing

house of leaves is so good!! when/if your friend finishes it you should definitely borrow it from them. it's probably the spookiest book I've ever read; like I'm pretty sure I was as paranoid as the guy in the book as I read it lmao.

Even the way the book is written is strange. The margins are all different and sometimes there is only one line on the bottom of the page. Some pages have words in all different directions (not confusing though, just blocks of text rotated) and everytime the word house appears in the book the text is blue. Other words are like that too. She said the house...if you go in this tunnel you get lost and go mad. This guy's friends were explorers and the house ate their fishing line trail and they got lost and one guy shot the other men. The tunnel has a way of changing. Also whatever you leave in the house, the house "eats" it....I am so scared to read it, lol. SO i just tell my friend to explain it to me, lo.

Ooh! I didn't know Gilbert Grape was based on a book either. That's a great film. Might have to read the book now.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is the best book I've read in the past few years. It made me cry a lot, but also laugh and smile.

Currently reading World War Z, which is really interesting.

I love Chuck Palahniuk and think Choke is possibly a favourite. You may want to consider Irvine Welsh too. Jurassic Park is my favourite book so I'm going to recommend that. Any Michael Crichton book is great. Prey. A Case of Need, Airframe...
