i figured i'd put this here since there is no 'computer' subtopic in entertainment but anyways
recently, this problem has been growing worse. my computer has two sets of away mode. the first away mode is when the computer light stays green, like it is when the screen is on. the second away mode changes the computer light to orange. i don't know what the difference is between the two modes, but there is a difference in getting out of them. if i leave the computer, and it switches to the orange away mode, i can kick the computer out if i come back (usually) however, if the computer switches to the green, i can't get it out and have to reset the computer. this 1 pixel line appears at the top of the screen, so the computer THINKS it's out of away mode, but it's just the one pixel on the top of the screen that it's showing. sometimes when it's in orange it'll switch to green and i'll have to restart the computer anyways. i don't think manually shutting off the computer every day is a good thing, especially for this piece of crap computer. i'm on a windows vista btw. i got this about...a year and a half ago. so, does anyone else know what this problem is? It's really starting to piss me off and it's getting worse every day. I tried to search google, but i only got results that were saying how to fix problems that the computer won't start up.
i believe that one setting is just an idle whereas the other setting is a complete hibernation. my last pc did something like that where, after being idle for a few minutes, it would switch to an idle screen until the mouse was moved. the longer the pc was idle beyond that point however, the pc shut down to the login page.
have you tried troubleshooting tips from google or even tech support shudder ?

Yea, I've tried everything i could find and tech support was absolutely no help at all.
i think i've got the computer so that it won't go into away, but last time i tried it just switched back to going into away. i found this whole thread of people with the same type of computer as me, and different ways worked for each of them, so i don't know what to do anymore.
at least there is some comfort knowing that other users are experiencing the same issue (not that this is something you want to hear as a positive!) ^_^
i would still think that it has something to do with your settings... like a timer or on/off option. have you been able to see what your computer settings are for the away/hibernation?

According to all the people in the thread, tech support has 'not even heard of htis problem'
According to this little box, the computer is set to sleep in 60 minutes, hybrid sleep is on, and now i've changed it to hibernate never. the hybrid sleep is a 'low power state so that i can resume work almost immediately' and i think that's what the green away is, but i'm not positive.
ok i've set it to not do hybrid sleep. i hope this works. i'm getting sick of having to restart the computer everytime i go to eat something.
So i set it to go away, and it didn't go into the green away mode. i hope it doesn't revert back to going into green mode. but, this seems like it will work now. thanks! i'll see how long this lasts before the computer breaks again.
edit: the computers been away several times now, and i haven't had to restart it since. normally i would have had to restart it every time it went idle. Yes, finally, no more excessive restarting.
