What happends when you use the Emerald on a pet. What happends when you use the 'use item' option of the Emerald?

The Emerald has the option to be used on a pet or used in general.

Looked it up, the Emerald is apparently a 'stat booster'. Use it on your pet, and it gains some stat(s). Not sure what stat it is, though.

When you simply just use it, you get the item
