so i have brown/red hair on my head, but everywhere else my hair is BLACK. i can't go a day without shaving, unless i'm auditioning for planet of the apes... and when i DO shave, i get the razorburn of the century! is there any way i can stay smooth without looking like edward scissorhands tried to tickle me to death?
so subeta: any tips you have for shaving (legs, pits and downstairs?) to share with me/ the world?
products? techniques?
I NEED SOME HELP HURR
I agree, even though I've got really dark hair, I can't shave every day, or even every other day, or my skin just.. dies, pretty much.
And instead of shaving cream, I always use the really mostorizing soap, like the Olay with ribbons and such. It works a lot better, for me.
orangey: i do use conditioner, actually, it gives the best results.. i have never used shaving cream, though... just went from a moisturizing soap to conditioner.
also i don't shave every day, ahahah- i'm just saying that i SHOULD, because within an hour i've got a forest of regrowth.
I highly recommend Coochy Shave Cream and the Coochy After Shave Protection Mist. I always got horrible razor bumps on my bikini line no matter what I did, but these two products work wonders. They have some crazy mix of lotions and oils that do it. I know, heehee, they have coochy in their name, but they're for all over body use, and can even double as a conditioner in a pinch.
OMG Coochy.. AMAZING. I completely forgot about it lol
www.slumberparties.com is where you can buy it from.. 18+ only though
I recommend Gilette Fusion with Hydragel. I use everytime I shave and I hardly get razor burn. Also, try a more effective razor as well. You won't need to use aftershave.
haha its so funny cuz i use a gillette mach 3.... and have had the same razor for nearly 5 years. so i completely support the gillette man razor for sure. hahaha!
i also agree with using moisturizing soaps and lotions instead of shaving cream. not only does it seem to make the skin softer, but you can actually see what you are doing in places. LOL
but in all seriousness, people's hair grows and does weird things different than other people. i definitely would shy away from shaving every day, even if your hair grows insanely. you will only just hurt your skin.

I agree with shatzy, I use the same ^^ Because, man razor is actually sharp. Those lady razors are, to me at least, a bit duller. Maybe because they think our skin can't handle sharper, I dunno. But I really saw a improvement after I switched.
I get serious razor burn with anything I use (even conditioner) unless I use a guy's shaving cream (Barbasol) or baby oil (I alternate). I use a guy's razor too, though I forget the brand name. It's by the same company that makes the Venus razors, and they seem to work a lot better than anything specifically designed for girls.
I also only shave every other day, at most. I get the best results though when I shave less frequently than that...I can just hardly stand to wait even two days is all.
Do you guys use shaving cream for sensitive skin? That also helps. And to avoid razor burn, you should moisturize after shaving, EVERY TIME. It helps keep the skin soft and soothes the burn. If you get ingrown hairs, you're supposed to exfoliate the skin whenever you wash, even after shaving, because it removes some of the dead cells and blockage that cause them.
I use the Venus Embrace (it has five blades) with Gillette SatinCare Sensitive Skin shaving cream, and I have only had issues with razor burn if I haven't shaved in a while.
When shaving particularly sensitive areas, such as... well... you know, make sure you use a FRESH BLADE every time. Dull blades cause the razor the pull the hair and irritate the skin instead of cutting the hair off, which also is part of what causes razor burn. And when shaving, no more than two strokes per area, even if you think you missed a spot, because repeated shaving over an area also causes razor burn. (Also, soaking in the tub or taking a hot shower before shaving opens the follicles and makes the hair softer so you also get a closer shave and less chance of razor burn.)
For shaving the legs and armpits, you shave against the grain -- that is, up. When shaving another area, take the first stroke with the grain (downwards) and then do a second stroke against the grain (upwards) to get the hairs that the first stroke missed. Again, don't shave an area with more than two strokes!
If you're looking for a really close shave, then it is best to wait at least two days of not shaving before the day, and then shave the day of because you get a closer shave when the hair is longer.
So, yeah. Those are just tips that I have had passed to me from other people and things I've learned from my own experience. I hope it helps. :)
Oh, and never, ever, ever use a 2-in-1 razor, like the Venus Breeze, for shaving sensitive areas -- it won't offer enough of a lather to protect your skin from the razor burn, although it can be handy if you're vacationing and need a quick, 5-minute shave. ^_^
mmm, i think i might have to nab the boyfriend's razor!
and i actually read abut that coochy cream in a magazine somewhere... it sounds legit, and it has a cute name, ahahah
I've used shaving cream for sensitive skin, in a few different brands. It just doesn't work for me. Same with the moisturizing. If I moisturize within a few hours of my shower, it just makes things worse.
:(
^actually, yeah me too. if i use lotion right after shaving in the shower, it really stings..
I clean my razor before I use it. I mean like. HEAVY DUTY CLEANING. I use alcohol and then warm water. And change it every week. -has extremely sensitive skin-
And then I use conditioner, or some sort of shaving gel. That usually works.
Also, use a male shaver. Closer shave and then it gives you an extra day of no-shaving.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned or not, but exfoliate the area you're going to shave to reduce the chances of ingrown hairs. ;o

That's how I am. I naturally have light brown hair, but everywhere else I have thick, black hair. I've been shaving everything with hair, neck down, since fifth grade. lol.
The best tips I can give you: Make sure you aren't cold when you take a shower. Use shaving gel. Put on lotion after you shave. Don't shave every day. Do it every other day. I promise, your stubble won't be any worse than any one else's. And if it does: try waxing.
DOWNSTAIRS: This piece of advice is going to make you want to hug me. Or maybe not. But it will make you love life at least a little bit more because an itchy/razor-burned/irritated downstairs is maybe the worst feeling in the world. There is after shave type stuff that they sell in the razor section, I just buy it at walmart. I think it's called Bikini Gel. The active ingredients should be lidocaine.
i dunno what lotion you are using (or where ;) ), but i tend to use neutrogena oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin. other lotions would irritate freshly shaven skin for me until i found this product. couldn't hurt to try it! ^_^

i just use a generic unscented lotion. geeze louis, it looks like i'm going to have to spend a little drugstore $$$!
languish: virtual hug
There are a lot of products for razor burn that are supposed to work, but so far, I haven't found any that work for me. I find that just using lotion, shaving gel for sensitive skin, fresh razors, and shaving regularly lessens my razor burn -- I only get it if I haven't shaved in a long time, so if I start shaving on a regular basis, my skin gets "used to" the razor and I don't get razor burn. :)
