I just moved from a pc to a mac, so funds are obviously running short (aka non existent). But I desperately need an image editing/paint program. I've downloaded gimp, but I can't figure it out, no matter how many basic tutorials I read. Long story short, I'm looking for the best, free image editing program. Minimally, It needs to be more complex than programs like paintbrush, and ms paint - layers!. Thank you (:

i suggest opencanvas 1.1, gimp, paint.net. i don't use them though, lol.

or just abuse trials of .. everything else. hah.

I literally just started using Aviary. So far, it's really awesome.

Get a trial of SAI easy paint tool, it's honestly the best, and it's very cheap too XD I know you said free, but yeah - I'm just telling you what I think is best.

I think open canvas is the best. Yes it has layers. :) Just google it you'll find it.

There is another thread like this down the page a little further, here. It should have some links to some programs on it (free ones). I know I posted a link to where you can download openCanvas 1.1 there :3

Artrage is pretty good :3 I think I got mine for free, and you get the layers and opacity as well ^^

Gimp is a little tricky at first, I recommend getting a tutorial for it on Deviantart, but when you figure out how to use it, well, you can get stuff like this:

Which was drawn by me in GIMP using a mouse. I don't even have a month of practice in this style, I just push myself really hard.

It's compatible with downloadable, special Photoshop brushes as well. (That's how I got that background!)
