I was really curious... What in your opinions makes the best pet names?
Not necessarily in general, but for you?
Myself, I prefer real names or at least made up names that have a nice ring to them. I like the idea of real word names, but I'm really into characters and I don't know about you, I'd have issues thinking of a personality for a pet named after a random object or adjective...
Then of course there's the pets a good bunch of have named our favorite characters like my Draco Malfoy or Balthier...
So, what's your naming preference and why do you go towards those names?
For me a good pet name has to have a deeper meaning for me personally ~ what others think about them doesn't matter to me as long as I love them or as long as I have a special connection to them. pokes Reinhard and Viracocha for example Because of that I also "downgraded" some pet names, simply wasn't able to love the name as much as I wanted to.
I can't say if I prefer real names, real words or whatever because I have everything; may look weird mixed and unbalanced for others but as I said it all has a personal reason. nods :)
If the pet represents a human character, it has to be an actual name or a word that can function as a name (or codename/nickname at least). Something like 'Swim' or 'Casually' isn't to my taste. I don't like plural words or anything with prefixes or suffixes, either. ^^; I also tend to like longer names, because I like things I can shorten.
For a pet that's an animal character, I generally prefer names that are less human-like and more cutesy. XD
i tend to prefer made-up names that I can pronounce. real world words (like catch, fish) are harder for me to like 'cause i always want the name and character to match.
Now sometimes i like my name to mean something relating the the pet; take Verdure it can mean "freshness in general" so she is a chibi pet.
I am not to into actual human names though and really don't like names of characters that already exist.
Even though most of my pets have real word names, I prefer made up names. Or at least made up names that I can pronounce or that roll off the tongue. I only have three made up names, but I've had dozens over time. They're a lot easier to expand and really develop beyond the confines of a real word.
But if when I go with Real Word names, I tend to like names that aren't objects (Refrigerator, Cup, Brush, etc), and go more with adjectives or verbs. Something like "Forebode" or "Uproar" is a heck of a lot easier for me to make a story/persona for than an object that basically lacks a good basis for some originality. Something like "Brush" would automatically pop out at me as like.. a hair stylist of some sort. "Forebode" you can mess around with a bit - not too much, but enough.
I don't like naming pets after people or characters, but I can understand why people would want to. It's just not my cup of tea, because I find it as restricting as object names.
I like real names or names in books/movies and such. I have quite a few character/real names...the other ones are ideas or themes.

Me too. I gave up a very nice name to get my Lei Solace just because he is my most important and beloved OC. Most people thought I was nuts for giving up the other pet though. I won't say which because it's on an account that has been inactive for 9 months and I might snag it back if I get a mystical plushie before they're cleared.
I like real word names that are not plural or that do not contain suffixes. Of course there are exceptions, but usually I just don't see myself referring to anything, living or not, as something like Discombobulating or Stagnantly. Furthermore, I don't feel some nouns would work as names for many pets, things like Refrigerator or Television. Just too technical, and not very pet-like for my taste. :P
I also like real names, or made up names that I can pronounce. Hoever, if they're some spur-of-the-moment name that are hardly pronouncable, like Anahahnygzankalaxa or Tagahaljajabakaiakajayalaoa, then I don't see much a point.:P
...
A complete character design makes it for me. Otherwise, even if it's a really good name it's just.. hollow.

Real names, but maybe I'm biased.

I really prefer real, human names (a la Klaus, Roy, Gladys, and to a lesser extent, Renatus), but I will sooner take a real word over a made up name. I think my distaste for most fantasy books has done this to me :P
My pets Shindig and Sordid literally go by those names, but they're a dog and a dragon-djinn, respectively -- I think they're allowed weird adjective names. For pets like my Coronata and Cigfran, they're ... foreign, but real words. Coronata is part of a Latin genus-species, and Cigfran is Welsh for "raven." Coronata is a surname and Cigfran isn't used at all by the character, as far as I know XD

Attractive real names, and occasionally real word names that work nicely as a name. Exotic/fantasy/made-up names can be very nice, but it's a pick-and-choose basis, of course.
Improper punctuation such as a lack of capital first letter or LOLCAPS will ruin a name for me as will numbers, underscores, jibberish, or weird text decorations.
I also don't like japanese names nor do I like real word names just for the sake of it being a real word (such as 'This' or 'Exit' or 'Jump'.)
I always want real names, if I could change most of my pets to real names I would XD If not real names a word that suits the pet, or a short, easy to pronouce made up word.
I have to have the first letter capitialized too, its really bugs me if it's not, and I've turned down many names I love because of it :(
I do have Razor Boy, whose name was taken from a song, but he was my one exception and before his character popped into my head, I really didn't know if I would be able to keep him because of my bias.
I personally know/have known several individuals in rl with odd 'word' names. Thanks to hippie/throw back parents, Sunflower, Rainbow, Curry and Terra (yes it's Tara, but they wanted it to be more mother earthy, so the intention counted) are a few. I had a yearbook advisor/english teacher in high school that went on a rant about parents saddling children with such name, but my own mother wishes to this day she'd just named me Storm rather than Lindsay (I wouldn't have minded either way). So I don't have a problem assigning a character to most real words as long as the word appeals to me. Yes my Artiste was a bit limiting (though she could have been a performer of some sort rather than literally an artist), but things like Frivolity, Ryegrass, Drop and Tilde I feel have wiggle room/fit the persona I wanted to create.
Personally, I like short, made up names that relate to something I like.

Made up names that are very very pretty like Kyleera, or real world names (that aren't stupid) like Angeline. (:
