Personally, my brain feels sad every time I see people use effect instead of affect.
This situation particularly annoys me, and I have seen it a lot on Subeta:
Does this have any effect on you? It affects me. :( :o
English isn't my main language, but I'm pretty sure affect (verb) usually refers to "having an influence on ..." and effect (noun) usually refers to the "result of something"...
I make that mistake a lot (but I always catch it in time!), I guess it's probably because I pronounce affect and effect the same.. :P
It annoys me every time :) but I try not to say anything. At least 'affect' and 'effect' are similar enough in usage (e.g. "it affected me greatly", "it had great effect on me") I can pretty much forgive people for getting confused most of the time.
Anyway, I have a few mental blips like that myself (for some reason I can never get practice/practise right without looking it up, and I always have to think about stationary/stationery), so I guess I'd be a hypocrite if I complained each time I saw someone making a similar mistake. :)
Same here ;) I used to not know the difference, but since I know how to use it right I try to watch my spelling!
It annoys me; people should know that 'affect' (noun) has an entirely different meaning.
like 'there and their' and 'your and you're'? :P I get those right most of the time, luckily ;D
I never make mistakes like that. Um...I don't think I do, anyway :P And if I ever did make a mistake like that it would be because I'm rush typing. I will usually let it slide if I see people doing it, though. It's chatspeak that really grates on my nerves...
I know the difference between affect (to influence) and effect (consequence)
I also know the difference between, their, they're, there; and then and than; and to and too :)

Me too. Most of it's natural to me now. It's easy when you've done it a lot. I could never understand how people say 'off of' in a sentence. Like 'Get off of the couch.' It doesn't even sound right.
If I had a nickel for every mistake like that here on subeta, I would be very rich. And if you try and say something people don't always take it correctly. I don't know if it is because of laziness or simply because some people never learned to write correctly. Confusing your and you're is another annoying mistake that we all put up with.
It does bug me and English isn't my main language too. There are some ppl. out there that are also confusing some words too.
Like wedding and weeding... too bad the person insisted that wedding is spelled as weeding. Oh and some have problems with the "in" and "on."
I just over look it, I know I make plenty of mistakes too !
not intentional of course ;)

ROFL
same here ;)

Unfortunately, in my 13 years of public schooling, I was never taught grammar (or what verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc. were), but this doesn't have to do with the education itself, just the way the classes were set up. I do think I'm doing fairly well despite that, but I didn't understand effect/affect until this post, and I'm being completely serious. :|
I remember it this way: affect = verb effect = noun
But it took me a LONG time to really get it (wasn't until I read this one fantasy book, forget its name) that it really sunk in. It's annoying, but I can understand the confusion.
I used to be able to tell by sound when I was younger, whether affect or effect should be used...it would just sound odd if it was wrong. Then for some reason, I lost that ability, haha, but I don't think I make that mistake - maybe very rarely. I have to think about it though >:C
I don't find it very annoying, to be honest.

My friend always mixes them up, she's asked me multiple times in our English class when writing an essay if she should put 'affect' or 'effect'. >.<
That does bother me. I realize that it's not realistic to expect everyone online to use perfect grammar, but it still bothers me when people mix words up. I even admit that I make silly grammatical errors by mistake. It especially bothers me when people use "your" instead of "you're" and vice versa.
