Greetings. I have a character who is in need of an analysis. I am worried that he is too much of an Angsty Sue.What do you think? Can you offer any suggestions?
Here is a basic outline of my character. (Please refrain from mocking my writing abilities. Thanks.) Please also note that this roleplay takes place in 1942, but technology and history has changed slightly; Almost like steampunk, in a way.
Anyway, on to my character:
Name: Amwulf Steinmetz Age: 43 Gender: Male
Brief physical description: Steinmetz, as he prefers to be called, has a long, square face with a very distinct jaw line. His hair is short and dark and is graying around the temples. Although his hairline is receding, he has a small puff/curl of hair that sits lower on his forehead. Having a visual impairment, he also wears small, round spectacles. Steinmetz is a rather tall man, being 6’,3â€, and has very broad shoulders. The rest of his body is relatively proportionate. His wardrobe consists of mostly dark tan suits.
History: Steinmetz was born in Germany in the winter of 1899. He spent most of his life in Germany, until 1939 when he found his way to the United States.
(Please note that the dates involved below are not set in stone. I have not yet decided on the exact years.)
While living in Germany, he married in 1927. His marriage lasted for three years until his wife's murder in 1930. There was a long and involved trial held, in which Steinmetz was found guilty and sent to jail for a life sentence.
In a way which I have not yet developed, Steinmetz manages to get out of jail after seven years. This is where his history gets a bit sketchy, as I am not completely finished with it yet.
In 1939, he comes to the United States to help fight in a rebellion against an ambitious mega corporation. This portion is not the area of my concern, so I will stop here.
So, do you think he is an Angsty Sue? He does not constantly moan about his past, he actually suppresses his emotions quite well.
Also, do you have any suggestions on how to improve him? Thanks much!
In my opinion, no. No he is not. He has a single, pivotal event that (I assume) defines his character. You do gloss over most everything, though, haha. (; You don't tell us his reaction to his wife's murder and his imprisonment which, depending on how you play it, will either lend itself more toward this Angsty Sue character or away from it.
Anyway, wrongful incarceration always reminds me of Edmond Dantès, who is a total badass.
I suppose I should have put more detail into my outline of him. Unfortunately I wrote it all quite hastily, as I had to run to class. I will add more here.
Steinmetz was devastated both by his wife's murder and his imprisonment, although now, years later, he appears to be rather indifferent.
I am not sure if I want him to seek revenge, or at least try to discover who framed him or not. I was thinking of having the Corporation which he is fighting against have something to do with it. I'm not really sure... What you you think?
As to the way in which he expresses his grief...well, he really doesn't. He instead suppresses a majority of his emotions as soon as they arise, thus making him appear indifferent. (He is known to have a short fuse when it comes to anger, however.)
Also: His greatest fear is being thrown in prison again.
I hope that helps define him a bit better. I can't believe I left that out in my first post. (This is the part I am worried about! slaps self) Bah. So, know that I actually covered most everything, what do you think? Can you offer any suggestions?
He still doesn't give me any Sue vibes, haha. I'm pretty sure not wanting to go back to prison is understandable, and you're allowed to be sad about your dead wife's murder, especially when the real culprit is still running around free. He might be constantly down (on the inside) but as long as he isn't moaning about it no one is going to be annoyed with it. d: And he isn't. So you're saaaaaafe.
I would definitely have the Corporation involved, it would give him a concrete reason to fight against them, especially if he doesn't particularly care for the people he's working with.
Is he violent in his anger?
