I got kicked out of my house almost two months ago. I still sort of talk to my mother, but barely. Just when I need the important things, like important documents and information. She refuses to take me to get my license because it's the last way she has control over my life. I'm living with my grandparents, am 17, and I'm not turning 18 until August 19th... after college starts. I already feel like a burden because my grandparents have to bring me to and from work -- a 15 minute drive each way. Idk about how those 'omg cool college kids' would see me for being dropped off and picked up, but my college is a 30-45minute drive away. I want to stop being this much of a burden. o

So, my question is, any suggestions on how to convince my mum to take me to get my license? She mainly won't do it because 'she has work' (she takes off one day every two weeks to hang with her boyfriend and won't take me on these days), or the days she 'so conveniently wants to take me', I have work (and she gets my schedule ahead of time, too, because I tell her when I work and when I don't so she'll know.).

):!

Ask someone else (friends, acquaintances)

take public transportation.

To convince her it might help to sit her down and talk about it. Explain what you want or find someone else to take you. Until you can convince her, I agree with stijn,

Take a bus, train etc... there must be some way to get there by public transport.

There... actually isn't any public transport. I don't live in a city. Southern Louisiana isn't very... public transportation-y, especially not the teensy towns. No buses run anywhere near my town/where I work, and there aren't trains/trams/metro/etc. I've suggested calling a cab, but my grandparents refused to let me. My friends all work during my hours, except for two, whose parents don't let them drive this far. I've asked them before to help and they do when they can.

Could you explain to your grandparents why you need to take the cab?

If not, I guess your only option is to let them drive you or ask them to help convince your mum?

can you get your grandparents to file to become your legal guardians? then they can legally sign documents for you that you would otherwise need parent signatures for.

omg are you going to mcneese

wait but why wont your grandparents take you?

Get your grandparents to take you. I don't believe you have to have your mom or dad. Just someone over 25 with a license.

Call down to the DMV and ask (also explain that you've been kicked out and NEED your license to get to and from college), but I'm pretty sure your grandparents can take you.

Well if you cannot convince your mother, just try and do what you can to not be a burden to your grandparents - but until you get 18 and can get your license yourself, you just have to let them drive you.

Of course it isn't fun, because you feel like they do stuff they usually wouldn't do. But they are your grandparents, I'm pretty sure that they'll drive you until you can do it yourself. In the meantime you should just help them out a lot in house and stuff ^^ that way you can pay them back a bit?

I would never disrespect my grandparents by going against something they've told me not to do. First off, they took me into their house when they could have left me living with my mother or on the streets. Secondly, they provide me with whatever living essentials I need-- despite the fact that I attempt to pay for them. Last but not least, I'm 17, thus a minor, so I cannot take control of my life. I would never make them worry about me or disrespect them in any way.

No, I'm not, lol. I'm going to UL. :P But my grandparents are willing to take me wherever I'd like to go. I just don't want them to have to.

The last time we went, they didn't let us get my license because my mother/father/legal guardian wasn't there to sign the paper. They wouldn't let my grandfather sign it. /:

I do everything I can to help my grandparents around the house, lol. Only thing left is for me to pay the bills, and unfortunately, my checks aren't enough to support us like that. xD

Ouch. I thought it only had to be someone 25+ with a license. God that sucks. Maybe just lean on your mom a little about it and explain that you really need this. Call her every day about it. You can afford to be a snot now that you don't have to live with her.
