I have an 8 week old manx kitten. I got her from a co-worker who not only told me the she was male, but that she was litter trained. And she may have been -- but moving to a new home disrupted it. Soo, I have an 8 week old kitten peeing and pooping in my living room - not cool! I've googled it and everything seems to vary. What are your personal experiences and tricks when litter training a kitten?

She knows where the box is and doesn't mind being in it, but refuses to use it for it's purpose.

we found a stray cat a few weeks ago that didn't seem familiar with the litter box either. we just kept putting her in the litter box occasionally until she started scratching around. she didn't use it at first but ultimately did. they like to bury that stuff.

this one is stubborn, she seems to know that I want her to use it so she refuses.

I would suggest keeping the litter box near her as often as possible just so she gets used to it being there. Also, when she poops somewhere else, try taking it and putting it into the litter box and then set her into the box as well. That should kind of give her the idea of what exactly she's suppose to do. :3 When my cat had her kittens several years ago, they all did the same thing, but after doing both of those things, they did get the hang of it. :3

Thanks Aurona (LOVE your HA!). I don't know how I could keep the box near her as often as possible since she moves around SO much.. but I have done the poop in the box things. I had her at the vet yesterday and thats what they suggested, but they also suggested using her paws to cover it up since they love to dig. I'm waiting for her to go again since she's eaten since the last time she's went.

just putting the kitty in the litter box isn&;t enough for them to understand that they need to do their business there... it helps if you put them in then take their front paws and actually make them dig in the box a bit.

also ... if you are really having that many problems with her going all over the living room (not something you want her to get into the habit of doing, trust me!) try keeping her in one room for a couple of days until she gets use to going in the box ... then keep the box in that room ... she&;ll get the hang of it. cats are very smart :) trust me, i know lol. i used to rescue cats and currently am the property of six of them lol.

if you have any more problems shoot me a mail, i&;ll see what i can do to help you :)

I've noticed that's not enough. :) I'm letting her run around the apartment while I'm here but goes in the bathroom when I'm not for now. I'm trying really hard to make sure I know where she is so I can catch her when she starts to do her business. I keep a towel with me and if I catch her, I run over pick her up, put the towel under her and take her to the box. Today I caught her peeing.. took her to the box and then when she came out gave her a treat and pet her alot. She took off out of the bathroom and went back to that spot and started to poop. Again, I took her in the bathroom and put her in the box. When she stood up to get out of the box, I used her paws to cover a little bit up and then watched as she finished covering the rest. Gave her a treat and lots of lovin'. I'm hoping a few more times of this and she'll have it down pat.

The locking her in the bathroom thing is a last resort, I hate listening to her cry and don't like leaving her in the small room. Thanks, I'll mail you if I need help, I need someone who knows what to do right now. I've never had a kitten this young before. :)
