Every time I try to do the lineart for something, you know in a new layer, then hide the sketch layer, it looks awful! I mean, the sketch is pretty good, but when I get the lineart, it's all jacked up! Any tips?
I get that all of the time, don't worry xD
The lineart is always different from the sketch - whenever I have a particular lack of confidence, I skip the sketch stage and just 'sketch' the lineart :| Cons: it is very time-consuming. Especially on paper (since I press so hard for the pencil to look like a pen) it's hard to rub out if I make a mistake.
And now I'll provide the standard answer : move your wrist (or arm, even) in one quick motion. Don't bother with the small strokes; unless you clean it up afterwards it tends to look furry. Try the pen tool?
I don't 'trace' my sketch for the lineart; it's more like I 'redraw' the entire thing, keeping closely to the sketch. I don't pay specific attention to keeping exactly to the original lines. If I traced it all, it looks more unnatural than if I just redrew it.
[edit]Holy shit, that was a long one.
Hm, my solution when it happens to me is to make the sketch the lineart. Just duplicate the layer, hide the original one and clean it up/fill it out. I do that with a lot of my stuff. Both my forumset and profile art was done this way.
OR, I don't do this much anymore, but you can always just leave the sketch underneath the lineart, just leave it visible? Like this. I change the opacity of the sketch layer so it doesn't look too overpowering, but you can get some really nice effects with it.
