I have just beaten the crap out of my art block with raging fury. Tell me what you think! I worked super hard on both of them. But when I scanned them, my scanner washed out all of my hard detail work. >_< I was so angry!
She's my original character, Ripfang. And yes, that's a sledgehammer.
Alright stop! It's hammer time!
If you want to see it full view, just click the pictures. They will take you to my deviantART account link of the pictures. :)
And this is my original character, Lina! My scanner ate this one alive, too.
I like! I especially love the one you did of Lina, one word of advice though on her background, try and make it blend a bit more with the character. Like maybe adding some gold or yellow highlights to her wings and shoulders
Heehee, thanks! I knew something was missing. :) hug
I would suggest getting a reference picture for a tricky head pose like the first one. this isnt a bad tutorial for inking (though Im sure you could find better) this can help you with your pencil crayon shading, and I'd suggest this one for its basic techniques. Burnishing can be an especially helpful to help highlight, or blend colours.
Prismacolour pencil crayons are very good for blending (an important part of pencil crayon drawings), they show up brighter on the paper (not dull and ugly like say, Crayola? used for elementary schoolers), and will yeild far better results.
edit: I might as well add in [x] is a great example as to why shading with different colours works so well and makes the object seem more realistic. (This is especially true for skin)
Best of luck.
Oouu, some of those tutorials look really interesting, especially the prismacolor one. See, I have a set of prismas, but I've used the once because I have a heavy hand, and they just crumble when I use them. I DO use Crayolas and (ick) Rosearts. The colors are very vibrant, but you have to work to get them to look good. And let's face it, $50 for 49 prisma pencils? Blar, that's a lot. @ But yeah, my scanner ate the colors on my pieces. On the first piece, for example, there is a lot of grey shadow detail work on the legwarmers, but my scanner washed it out. I can't really fix that, and it kills me D:
As for the color theory stuff (like blending and using different colors to shade), I took all of those classes in college. Shading with a complementary color gives a much stronger and realistic shadow than just going darker. Once again, I can say that my scanner killed a lot of the subtleties in my piece. ;___; However, I REALLY like the metal tutorial! I always struggle with metal things.
Thanks so much for your advice and crits. I really appreciate them. :) I'll keep it in mind and apply it to my next works! (If you have a dA, you should really go in and crit some of the stuff I did for my college classes. Now THAT would rock. <3)
