Are there any machines that are known for giving good items or is it all just random?

- It really depends on what type of item you're looking for. Before and during the reading drive, Blue Sky was popular because it gave books. Ocean Depths gives some nice clothes. Prize Get is good for toys, and Blue Moon for trading cards. You can potentially get an Angelic Potion from Shining crane, last I heard, and Bloodred or Darkmatter from Burning Chance.

I'm pretty sure most, if not all, have a chance of some DP items and potions/elixirs :)
