Umm...is there an event right now to choose sides or is only the Omen Islands Festival forum only doing that? How do you earn points for a team or can you even do that? can you speak to the other teammates like the pirate captain?-If so how?

There aren't officially sides to choose from. It's just the users in that forum doing that, favoring pirates over the islanders or vice versa.
