I feel rather dense having to ask this, but since I'm still basically a newbie as subeta, I'm hoping it's okay x) Are there specific places where they are "hidden" or is it just random to find them?

Nope, it's completely random. They can pop up on any Subeta page, anywhere.

Your questions fine, I wouldn't worry much about asking questions here :P The stars appear on random pages. So click about doing things and you'll be sure to find them!
